First one is a 15th century French arming sword, yes, and the second is a 15th century Italian longsword. They're both historical replicas. The gloves are just baseball gloves.

I guess esthetics are subjective. I never intended to own a katana at all. I now own 4 Ronin Katana Dojo-pros. I have one O-katana with Musashi style tsuba and a bohi, one "thunderstorm" tsuba Ko-katana, one "trapped Oni" Ko-katana with a red saya and a 30" bladed katana"trapped Oni" tsuba and red saya. I just ordered a 28" katana with a square tsuba and bohi and another 30" katana. I'm also waiting on a pair of Musashi style wakizashi with bohi. I've been surprised by the variety of blade styles. Add in tsuba design, sori, minuki, the variety of color combinations between the ray skin and the silk used to wrap the handle, etc... quite a variety. Just my opinion, though.
@billyheaning
@billyheaning 9 ай бұрын
I get what you're saying. A katana is a beautiful sword, but in the end, the only thing that really changes the look of a katana or even a wakizashi is the hilt construction. I'm aware of the different shapes and sizes of early historic Japanese sword designs, but if you look at the sword through history, it rarely changes. Sometimes the blade is longer or the curve is more pronounced, but that's about it. The reason why I drifted away from katanas and got into Euro style is because of how different they are. A viking sword is nothing like a two-handed longsword from 400 years later. Rapiers, arming swords, longswords, kriegsmessers, falchions, broadswords, cutlasses, sabres. And that's not even getting into blade types. I'm not saying that Japanese swords or ugly or anything, just the designs become repetitive and similar. I love the diversity of European and Western swords. But like you said, it's just my opinion, too! Thanks for watching, and enjoy the rest of your day!

@billyheaning
@billyheaning Жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply, I just now saw this. No, in my opinion, it’s not worth the 100 dollars. It’s made of a softer leather material that isn’t like their common scabbards. I can’t remember the name of the material but honestly I don’t think it’s anywhere worth 100 dollars. Unfortunately I don’t know the size of the opening.

I won't make a mention toward the history of Ninjato, but one thing that is historically accurate is weapon black. Old school weapon black was made basically with grease and charcoal and would be used to remove the shine from a sword so a flash from the sun glinting off your weapon didn't give you away to a skilled archer.

Baluar IS Kult of Athena. It is their brand and they have used multiple forges to build the swords that they spec. They still have a bunch of sub $300 swords on offer including a 14th Century 2 hander and a 15th century arming sword. the 15th Century Italian Longsword is on "backorder"...but I'd say that's on "discontinued" as they no longer work with OTC. Some of the new preorder swords have gone to the $300+ and $400+ level.

I don't know,,, if water gets into the scabbard, which it will since you can't seal it to your mouth,, it will be too much water to blow out, so you won't be able to use it. but,, the small straw,, you can blow it out if water gets into it, so it will work. I suggest an experiment. Fill the tub, lay down in it, and use the breathing tube. (wear swimwear and film it. )
@tsmspace
@tsmspace Жыл бұрын
If I were to bet,, I would bet the square tsuba was because at some point, a nice round shape that was symmetrical was too hard for someone to make, and they could cut a square easily,, so they made a prop, and that was cool enough that it carried into a film crew making it to the movie. ,,, but, squares are good, and better than circles when it comes to occupying space, which means it's a much better handguard,, and since today we don't wear so much fabric in a garment, the square will hang up less when drawing it, meaning it might be a better sword for the modern user. ((back-a-when with so much cloth, the pointy tips would have snagged,, but our clothes are lighter and closer to our bodies, so this won't be the same issue)). ---- I personally think regardless of historicity,, the square ninja sword is a good sword, maybe even superior for today's average joe.
@billyheaning
@billyheaning Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! Yes, it makes setting it down or picking it up at an angle a lot easier than a circular tsuba. The only thing I could think that would be a negative is that if ninjas did wear their swords on their back and they fell backwards, landing on a square tsuba with sharp points would hurt!

@@billyheaning Hey Billy! Great Video! But you said that the sword was light and nimble in comparison to the Windlass Classic Medieval. I asked MRL for the actual specs of the sword (sharpened and same blade, guard and pommel as yours) and they told me it would then weigh 3.5 lbs with a point of balance of one foot from the pommel (so 2.75 inches from the guard, as the length of the tang is given with 9.25 inches) I doubt very much that the POB is that close to the guard because of the overall proportions of the sword. Alas, 3.5 lbs is very heavy for a one handed sword. So I suspect that it will be hit or miss if you get a well balanced quite nimble sword or something like a sharpened crowbar. The problem is, that you can't return a CYOS sword. So I'd like to ask you if you could do me a favour and measure the weight and point of balance of your sword. If they are about the same range as the specs given to me by MRL (3.5 lbs and 2.75 inches), then the very big and massive Type J pommel does balance the whole sword out so effectively that it doesn't feel heavy at all. Then I would go for it and buy one. By the way: Would you consider this a more whippy sword, or does it have a good amount of stiffness? So many questions man, but I am just that undecided. Many thanks in advance. Markus

Hey, thanks for the video. Sometimes you just want to see it in hand, up close, and kind of carried around. A lot of more in depth reviews talk about the sword a lot, and show cutting, but it can be tough to just kind of see how the sword looks. Especially something like this that isn't a hugely popular piece. I like the look of this one, I think I'm going to get it for my brother's 18th birthday (bit of a tradition for my siblings, they get a sword when they turn 18, he's the last of the bunch).
