The Winchester Featherweight is, to my eye, one of the prettiest bolt action rifles ever made.

Great pointers! I just ordered the "Lee Precision Deluxe Trimmer" today (an upgrade of this model) and like the no-muss,no fuss aspect of this product.Besides doing case preparation all in one step,I am limited on reloading space so it is just what I need to avoid added clutter on my work bench.All the gadgets for hand-loading are wonderful tools,but as new ammo loader I strive to save time and space.This item covers brass case downsizing, chamfering and deburring all in one stage, so it' a keeper.Thanks!

Any factory 243 ammo that you think would work for long range?

I would say Hornady 90 ELD-X.

I have heard that tikka has changed the twist on the .243 to 1 in 8 to allow for the longer bullets (now out to 115gr). As you know, it is not the weight of the bullet but the length of the bullet that needs stabilizing. Longer bullets do weigh more but it is the length that matters. I put a 24" pacnor barrel with a 1 in 8 twist because several types of the 100gr bullets would not group past 100yds. Hero at 100yds.......a zero at 300yds. I shoot in the west where shots are often 250+yds so once we have our zero (100 yds for me), we then go to 300 to make sure we are still accurate. The change in twist made a huge difference out to 300yds. Its interesting that tikka makes the 6mm with a 1 in 8 twist. Really liked your video format - down to earth. Keep'em coming!
@Theolddeerhunters26 күн бұрын
Thanks for your comment. Tikka did change to 1 in 8 and they are hitting dealer shelves now. Personally, I still view the 243 as minimum for whitetails under 200 yds. I prefer 270, 7mm for long shots on large game.

I bought my dad a hunting lease for Father’s Day and im gonna buy my pops this rifle too. I have a model 70 featherweight in 308 myself that packs a punch but this xtr is really nice just classic. Is 270 too big for pops he’s 63? I’d prefer to get .243 for him but I know for fact they have 270

Great tip for an age old problem. The only way I could see a dented shoulder hurting you is if you ran a compressed load because then it could over pressurize the case.

On some of our scope and scanner reviews we have taken our dog out to 100 and 200 yards for reference. Do you think that is helpful? We compared pulsar XG50LRF and the XP50 side by side at measured distances.

Really enjoyed your video and your logic behind each cartridge. I really love the 6.5 grendel as it fits perfectly the type of hunting I do for hogs and deer. The 308 packs a lot of power but the recoil is too much compared the grendel. Thanks for sharing!

i believe 384 consumes less battery than 640. I think people should consider this as part of their options.
@Theolddeerhunters2 ай бұрын
It uses standard 18650 rechargeable so power consumption is not much of a problem.

My son and I went guided hog hunting this past March 2024 for the first time and rented the rifle (we had shotguns with slugs but felt it better to use a rifle). ONE Grendel round went through two hogs (just behind the ear on the first sow and into the boar's heart behind it) and killed both; it was not an fmj round. This was at maybe 60-80 yards kneeling down free hand through the brush. I only say this because I want to give all the info. Originally, we were going to use 300 Blackout, but the guide talked us into the Grendel (and we were open to new things). Now, totally sold on it.

I think you are absolutely correct when you say the stocks on these rifles are the prettiest on the market. I’ve had this rifle in 30-06, 280 Remington, 270 Winchester, 25-06 Remington and 243 Winchester. I still have the 270 and 25-06. The others were sold to friends or, in the case of the 30-06, gifted to a family member. I really regret selling the 280. Anyway, thank you for a great video!

I've got the t3x in a 223 1-12 twist, and a bergara b14 243 with 1-12, both love Norma tipstrike in 55gr and 76gr respectively, both were new and got more and more accurate over the first box or 2 or ammunition with a couple of cleans, both capable of .3" groups on a good day, average .5-.6, don't think I've ever had over an inch groups at 100m on either which is fantastic considering I don't reload. Great video demonstration. 👍

That is a beautiful rifle, and it shoots good too! Nothing wrong with the push feed, I'm a Remington 700 fan. Love the 243! Just bought a Weatherby Vanguard Bronze in 243! Am seriously considering buying a new model 70 in either 06 or 08.

Ar in x39. If you were smart and found the right soft point or “hollow tip” not hollow point. And got a bunch of cheap ones when you still could. The American brass stuff is good too but not super cheap like what you could get 10 years ago.

I see you mounted the Thermion way too backwards that the mount clamp didn’t fully engage the rail. Is there any reason why you didn’t flip the mount around so you can have proper eye relief?
@Theolddeerhunters3 ай бұрын
If you look closer, you will see that the mount is flipped to the rear and the rear clamp screw is in the last notch of the rail. I had to replace the Leupold rail with and EGW so the rail would extend farther to the rear. The Leupold rail screws are centered, but the EGW screws are offset. I have perfect eye relief on this rifle, and the scope is centered in the rings. It also works well when I use it on my AR rifles. Thanks for watching.

Can you shoot 200-250 yards with a base magnification of 2x thermal scope? I thought you needed 3x base mag for longer shots
@Theolddeerhunters3 ай бұрын
A 3X is a little better if the image is as good as an XP50. I run the PIP in on 4 or 8X for long shots. If your shots are usually 200 plus, a Thermion 2 XG50 or Bolt TH50c would be better.

That’s a beautiful rifle and an exceptionally beautiful piece of wood 😍 I love the Winchester model 70 Featherweight, I’ve had two in my lifetime. The first one that was chambered in .280 Remington I NEVER should have sold , but that’s life and we live and learn . The one I recently purchased is chambered in .30-06 , it has a beautiful wood stock on it as well ( I’m very particular about the wood on my rifles, and I scoured every gun shop on the internet until I found one that satisfied my likes ) I do prefer the controlled round feed just for the sake of positively being controlled throughout the process of cycling follow up shots in a hurried situation ( charging bear or what have you ) but yes indeed these rifles are my favorite over any other make or model , as you stated , smoothest feeding , well balanced and very accurate no matter what ammo I run through it . I like this .30-06 model 70 Featherweight so much that it’s my GoTo rifle for most anything medium to Big Game that I hunt . I am looking at buying one in .243 Winchester as well for coyote hunting.
