Wow, I didn't expect such a serious essay about a pop group, but it seems like this is exactly what I was looking for and waiting for in the recommendations. I want to say that most of what was said characterizes not so much OOO, but the author and his perception. I don't think that their concept is really that intricate. After all, it is a collective work of songwriters, stylists, video directors, choreographers and finally the guys who perform it. When so many people are involved in the process, the result often happens on its own, without any special plan. Yes, there is a certain concept, but many of the details you mentioned appear rather by chance. Indeed, I see an attempt by pop artists to be more complex, more intellectual. They can make references even to Baudelaire and Rimbaud, but still have to remain in the mainstream. Therefore the result is blurry, the references are not at all clear. So when I listen/watch Savannah, Angel, I see ordinary K-pop artists, nothing special for me. I already catch bits of decadence in the saga, but it’s not enough for me. Something really interesting starts with Dora Maar. I’m not a pop music listener at all. I’ve been in niche genres of SDBM, darkwave and Russian Doomer Music all my life. How did I end up here? I think it’s all because of bl dorams. KZbin algorithms brought an UndergrOund idOl to my shores, and it was wonderful. It’s really something. It’s hard to believe that an idol group does this, damn it! But even more important to me are their sexy performances: libido, skinz, chrome arts, gaslighting. I’m a straight woman, so I’m judging from my own perspective. For the first time I saw an image of sexy men who seduce, but do not try to dominate. I would also like to make a long video essay on this topic, but I speak very bad English. Anyway, thank you for your thoughts and for the opportunity to speak out at least here. I have been looking at such a phenomenon as OnlyOneOf for two months now and I don’t even have anyone to discuss it with, although I am bursting with emotions.

Additionally, Dora Maar’s preferred medium in her career as an artist was always photography but she suddenly shifted to painting for a brief period of time ( the decision is widely believed to be influenced by Picasso). She painted a few self portraits but she only ever painted herself from the rear view. I feel like this is connected to many times in members’ back is towards the audience in the choreography.

This really answered a lot of questions I've had about their lore and art. Savana has been my favourite debut for a long time and ooo is such a breath of fresh air in the k-pop stage. I love your video essays and your perspectives. This video is as beautiful as always. Thanks for your hardwork! ❤❤

As expected, this is a great and insightful video that will affect the way I look at these two songs forever. It was also really educational to see you delve into the philosophical and cultural (and even botanical, damn!) references in detail, your dedication to research never fails to amaze me. On a more personal note, as a theorist myself it was really rewarding to see how many similar conclusions we arrived at independently of each other. It really speaks to how cohesive OnlyOneOf's art is, despite how unapproachable analyzing it might seem to someone who's used to the more common types of storytelling in K-pop. It's such a joyful experience to be a fan of these amazing artists and a part of this passionate yet mature fandom, and videos like this one reignite my love for both.

@@choerim absolutely! I personally love when my conclusions manage to overlap with someone else’s even if they weren’t very obvious or even intended because it’s one of those aha! moments when u feel just a little more justified in your collective understanding (if u don’t mind I’d love to know if u have some specific examples of where we overlapped (or maybe even where we differentiated)? No pressure though, I’m just curious). I imagine you feel this too but such a big part of theorizing sometimes is throwing all kinds of things at the wall and hoping it sticks, this video was a lot of that for me because of how open ooo’s lore is (especially back in the day when their direction still could’ve gone anywhere) and I’m very relieved things actually managed to stick! Really thank you for watching and the compliments 🫶

@@lou2766 I get what you mean with the "throwing things at the wall and hoping they stick" analogy, I definitely felt that way when I was working on my very first theory video about the instinct series. I had all these scattered thoughts and a deep attachment to instinct part 2 that I had to articulate or I would've driven myself crazy, and I was really worried the fandom reaction would be a collective "wtf". The overwhelmingly positive response to that video has made me a lot more confident in theorizing going forward. I hope you feel confident about your own theories too, you have every reason to! Honestly, pinning down specific similarities in our theories - or differences, for that matter - is really hard even though there were moments when I pointed at the screen and went "I said/thought that before!". I think it's because the true similarities lay in our general approach to analyzing their art, so the conclusions we arrive at often have the same fundaments even if their differ a little in the final stage. It seems that we both understand the meaning of their art to lie in a multitude of perspectives, which build a bigger picture, but also exist as separate, smaller pictures, shifting and overlapping depending on how you choose to look at them and which part to focus on. Actually, your mention of cubism in the dOra maar analysis has been a huge influence on how I understand their art, so thank you for that! I think the line in seOul drift "the head won't understand, the more complicated the clearer it gets" has made that cubist lense feel justified as a way to analyze their entire lore. It's not meant to be something intimidating and impenetrable with symbolism too intricate for the average person to grasp, it's a human story about human emotions and experiences, and any approach to it is valid because all that matters is that you felt something. This is also why articulating a lot of my points is difficult in a KZbin comment. Their lore exists as something so abstract, vibrant and non-fixed in my head that explaining my thoughts in a more detailed, cohesive way usually takes a good few hours/days and results in a long essay. The most recent analysis I wrote was a Tumblr post after I saw OOO live in concert, idk if you'd be interested in reading it though. It's mostly focused on how the perspective of us as spectators fits into the larger picture of their art, how it can add more meaning to the themes of putting someone on a pedestal, or the snippets of their idol life we see in the skinz MV etc. Sorry for the already long comment, but something I forgot to mention previously is that the beat and beyOnd storyline chronology you came up with is actually so great! Putting the scene with Mill getting bullied and Nine helping him run away as the first event makes so much sense, I always took it at face value that it happened later into their relationship but you're right, everything makes a lot more sense when you think of it as their very first meeting.

@@choerim interesting thank you! and i can definitely empathize with that, whenever i see some abstract connection I usually note it down so now my notes are a mess of so many ideas that can connect to each other in a bunch of different ways. and sometimes its so hard to decide what you want to emphasize or actually write a whole theory around because its so many moving parts. Even with this video i had so many moments where i thought about savanna's connection to something else like libidO or skinz (in terms of the meta which is a whole other beast, def send me that post if u want btw) and felt so bummed i couldn't explore it in depth without it becoming some huge tangent lol. Also dont worry abt lenghty comments, i love reading. As for the beat beyOnd chronology, it was certainly one of those "i hope this sticks moments" and reading that it resonated for you as well is a WIN! thank you again

as always such a slay analysis and way of thinking,my first language isn’t english and i’m not familiar with a lot of the ideas you mentioned, but i appreciated every single one of them and tried my hardest to wrap my head around it,OOO are such a comfort zone for me as a young adult still questioning life to this day and in a environment where being anything but “normal” is a death wish, they brought me so much comfort and enjoyment by breaking down their lyrics, cinematography and ideas,it made me escape into a world where i can experience being hurt and comforted all together,i’m just so grateful to them and lyons ✨🤍

Sometimes I look at OnlyOneOf as something familiar, usual. But from time to time my jaw still drops and my eyes sweat and it's hard to believe that they actually exist. That we have all this, beautiful, important, profound. Bow to these hard-working guys who signed up for the project, they rock it. Bow to everyone whose brain and soul were creatively involved in the project. To those who gave the green light. Thanks for the great essay from the bottom of my lyOn's heart! Very interesting. It's great when someone pays attention to details that you might have missed and shares this observation with you.
