This is fascinating. I wonder where these people are today?

I know Phil is retired. This video is bittersweet as Bell Labs was a powerhouse of innovation in its day. Now this national treasure was spilt in 2006 with a small group going independent and the rest enduring Alcatel and Nokia ownership.

Great to see this video. I do remember Art driving at these events. I was in a lower run group but flagging the corners, during their session also was a thrill seeing them rip by.

I never worked for Bell Labs, but a local Bell operating company as a TSPS operator in the early 1980's. I'm not going to say here what happened, but it was 180 degrees different from what is presented in this video. I eventually went on to a very good career in I.T., that I'm still involved in. AT&T's loss.

@@richardconte381 I'm going to do some guesses here. Before the early 1980's cards were 14 digits (usually a 10 digit phone number and four digits). There was no database to check when they were entered using the KP-Special key. They had to be in a specific pattern, like a credit card (look up the Luhn Algorithm as an example). If the number was accepted the KP-Special wouldn't blink, which would mean the number was invalid and try again. People were still making up numbers. Eventually there was a database. Numbers were still 14 digits, and could even be a 10 digit phone number and a four digit PIN. Better fraud protection at that point. Numbers were entered the same, but it wasn't just a number pattern that was checked. I don't think calling cards are used anymore, but I still have some old ones saved. I was just a bottom of the barrel operator then, so I didn't know all the details. Even though I'm an I.T. analyst now (but not with a telecommunications company) this is my educated guess.

I could've done without the transphibians sketch but what a tight performance of Jerkin Back and Forth.

The Transphibians were hysterical to us at the time... especially when we were so buzzed! 😅 We had watch parties at each other's houses every Friday night for this show and the next night too, for SNL, (back when SNL was still funny). "We" were a group of 18 and 19 yr olds too young to get in the bars so...!

Personally, I think bell labs was the Google before Google. Eric Schmidt, one of the most influential people at Google, worked at bell labs and brought his experiences with the work culture from there into Google.

That's a really interesting question - we only saw these internally after they were made. Maybe at job fairs or science competitions?

Electronic switching equipment for long haul, short haul and central office telecommunications. Labs were for developer, integration and end-to-end testing. Unlike the current internet telephone equipment had to be 99.999% reliable. That meant a lot of testing.
