Nice progress! You ever watch B4Me Bonsai? Not sure how close he is to your environment, but his rules for trimming and not trimming seem to hold up. Looking forward to seeing how she goes this year, brother!

Silver birch has little white warts on the tips of branches, downy has little hairs… I’m sure it was you I learnt that from a while back😂
@BackGardenBonsai3 күн бұрын
lol probbaly was from me, but yeah its something to do with the leaf hair. i have it written down somewhere. keep forgetting to check

Cool! Nice you got one of those grow kits to do more than just sprout! Anyone I've ever gotten sprouts then never survive. But seeds I find grow 99% of the time
@BackGardenBonsai3 күн бұрын
Cheers, yeah i dont know why everyone struggles with these kits. they are just a bag of seeds in a fancy box lol. but maybe they are sat on a shelf to long and not as fresh as ones you find outside or something.

Thank you for the update Ian. I too have the larger leaf variety and as yet I've not wired it as I didn't know whether succulent branches will remain in place when the wire is removed. Have you tried this before? If so, did it work?!
@BackGardenBonsai10 күн бұрын
Cheers, yeah you can wire them, but they are not as bendy and the like bark can easily get damaged. you just have have to a bit more careful. i have done it with my Port and it worked really well.

Clip and grow works better with Jade! Cut branches where you’d like bifurcation just above a node and two branches will emerge from the leaves. Voila!

Cheers, yeah, clip and grow is defo the better option in 99% of cases with these for sure

Ian, really enjoyed your journey with this plant. Have only been working on my own trees for the last 18 months, (6 ginseng ficus from Morrisons, poor quality, loved nonetheless, air rooting from two ficus houseplants and, finally two root over rock benjamina I took from the previously mentioned houseplants 25 xyears ago (but lost interest in). I live in London and have tried various 'recipes' for soil mix with various degrees of failure. What would you recommend, please. Ps really enjoy your pragmatic and route one approach. Terence
@BackGardenBonsai14 күн бұрын
Cheers :) ginseg and benjamina are gonna be good in london as you probably dont have much access to outside. but anyway. i always use molar clay and perlite, mixed with some compost. i used to use equal parts, but now i tend to use less compost. you just have to play around with the ratios to get something that hold enough water, but also drains quite fast. also molar clay is often sold as cat liter ...but not all cat liter is molar clay so you need to double check what you are buying.

Ian, thanks for advice, New Safety Tread et al ordered and looking forward to repotting existing and some cuttings I've have just in water. When are you going to English oaks some attention?
@BackGardenBonsai10 күн бұрын
@@terencedixon2960 The safety safety tread is good stuff 👍 i dont have any english oaks, and no space for any. i am pretty sure i did plant some acorns years ago, but i dont remember what happened. ive only got the 1 holm oak now.

You must need a new fork after that crazy root work. Love how quickly the privet bounced back. Starting to get a nice primary structure. Tiny flowers are a lovely bonus. How old do you figure this tree is?
@BackGardenBonsai14 күн бұрын
Cheers Sue, luckily the fork is indestructible lol as for when it started, I snapped the twig off a hedge in later 2016, as for the mother tree, no idea, probably very olllllld.

Really liked the hard prune-back. Great bones underneath - quite interesting to see the tree emerge from the shrub. I also like the effect from growing the tree slowly in the small pot. Lots of fine details that I loose from my rapidly grown trees.
@BackGardenBonsai23 күн бұрын
Cheers Sue, it is really different growing them fast in big pots, compared to the slow and small pots. you get details ... but the trunk is always missing. somewhere in the middle is probably going to get you the best of both

These are quite a rewarding tree, I picked up a few in a sale area a 3 years ago, one variegated and they are already well on their way to being convincing trees. The only thing is that truck thickness takes ages so find some with a trunk already. Otherwise they can take a lot of abuse and grow pads quite readily. This one has a good shape.
@BackGardenBonsai25 күн бұрын
Cheers, yeah they are tough, but you are right about the slow trunk thickness! also a variegated version woudl be cool!

Cheers Sue, if it was an indestructible drought lover, it would have died within hours of being in there lol
@mattiecreatesАй бұрын
Yeah that pot is stunting the growth on that like crazy. , id recommend potting it up into something much bigger. once established do a full defoliation and you will get so much back budding
@BackGardenBonsai29 күн бұрын
yeah 100%, but its fun in the small pot lol. but yeah. long term it will need uppotted for sure.

@BillyBobJoeSnrАй бұрын
Maybe it's time to perform a trunk chop, as it looks a bit to tall for the tiny pot.....just my opinion.
@BackGardenBonsaiАй бұрын
Cheers, i think this pot is so small that its always going to look tall no matter what lol
@baldyetiАй бұрын

This tree is sooo cute! I love how it looks completely to scale in the palm of your hand. That ridiculous amount of root growth reminds me I should repot mine next spring. How do you overwinter?
@BackGardenBonsaiАй бұрын
Cheers Sue, yeah they grow a lot of roots lol. so quickly too. .. but as for overwintering, i do nothing. just leave it outside. but the winters here are not to bad and they are quite tough. they are used as hedges a lot here, but even in a pot its never too cold for them.
@baldyetiАй бұрын
She’s lookin great, Ian. Consistent producer, for sure. Mine kept dying back to the ground, but that’s probably because my drastically cold winters. I finally tossed it. The big looping canopy, is that part of your design? Or just keeping it vigorous until you start designing it? I’m trying to envision where you’re going with this one
@BackGardenBonsaiАй бұрын
cheers bro, yeah thats crazy yours was dying back, these are usually so tough, but i guess your winters are tougher lol. as for the direction, yeah, im not 100% sure. probably try and keep it kind of similar shape to what it is now, but there is a bit a risk it just turns into a lollypop, so we will see what happens

Structure is coming along nicely - slow growth seems to make really small internodes! Still blows my mind that fuchsias grow as shrubs. Wasn't till I moved to the milder Canadian west coast that I saw these growing in the ground and producing trunks.
