Hi Ross. It's a real beauty. I know you probably need some rest as what you do is hard work. I hope you can find a source for the materials you need and get back to making these great works of craftmanship. Don't want you get out completely. Get some rest, stay warm, and look around here and there until you come across a source. Take care Ross. -------Ed from Michigan.

My father bought a Worthington feed pump and turned it into a regular steam engine. Hit cut the pump end off of it and then made a crankshaft for it using Farmall F20 rods and used the F20 belt pulleys for flywheels. It was the last thing he built before he passed away and never got to run it on steam. Needless to say building a boiler for it is a future project of mine. 👍

Like it, but all that power and it is generating 40 watts maybe. Certainly need a smaller generator and a more efficient speed step up. Using Vee belts like this can't be very efficient. I'd think, you should be able to get 500 watts to 1000 watts out of this steam engine with a better setup.

If you made it self propelled, you could call it a showman's engine! It does need a bit more power though.

Definitely needs a smaller alternator. Sounds like it should be at much higher RPMs than it is.
@Islandwaterjet27 күн бұрын
Very rare that we see a steam engine actually doing anything other than freewheeling.That part is good. This example, grossly overloaded to try that 3600rpm generator head and expect it to work. A ultra low RPM wind generator head would be most appropriate for this. 150 rpm perhaps 500w directly coupled to the engine crankshaft no gearing would be most efficient.

Interesting. You're not supplying any magnetizing energy? PF angle mismatch for sure.
@crissd828323 күн бұрын
Can you explain?
@mrsentinel491122 күн бұрын
@@crissd8283 Without knowing much about the induction machine or whether he has a bank of delta/wye configured capacitors supplying magnetizing energy on the stator, etc, the engine seems to be seeing a lot of impedance for such a small load, which tells me the operating point of that machine is in a weird spot. The phase angle, i.e. the difference between the voltage angle and current angle of that light bulb, is probably not close to zero. I would kind of expect that engine to not be working so hard to keep a fairly unloaded machine spinning at synchronous speed.
@crissd828322 күн бұрын
@mrsentinel4911 A resistive light bulb (incandescent light) will always have a near perfect power factor?
@mrsentinel491122 күн бұрын
@@crissd8283 Right, so you would expect the dynamics of the machine to reflect that. It's clearly not in steady state so those stator/rotor field dynamics are a big mystery to me without some more information.
@crissd828322 күн бұрын
@mrsentinel4911 Maybe, with using an inefficient double vee belt setup (vee belts are not very efficient) combine with a huge generator (probably capable of 20kw) that has decent drag due to large bearings and probably a cooling fan might actually be the culprit? In previous videos, he struggled to get the generator up to speed with absolutely no electrical load on compressed air. I'd bet, He needs a generator that is more in the 3kw range or less, 1,800 RPM or less, with a cooling fan removed and a chain or gear drive.

Thanks for the video, I operate 2x 60 hp steam engines generating electricity on 24 hours basics as our farm is far from the main grid. The engines are 1870 design although built in 1980, the last 2 engines built by Skinner Co in Ere Pennsylvania before filing for Chapter 11 from asbestos claims…. Steam compared to compressed air is far better because of its expansion properties as it cools in the piston bore, on another note I don’t see a governor system on your engine that is meant to increase or decrease steam consumption as your alternators loading verys @1800 rpm your alternator should read power
@johnalexander4356Ай бұрын
I'm positive you know this but I'll say it since I don't think you said it here. As you increase the rpm from the engine roughly 18:1 there is a corresponding reduction torque driving the generator shaft. Once the generator is under load will there still be.sufficient torque to drive the generator at 1800 rpm? And will the single 1/2 inch v belt transmit the torque? Maybe so, but I haven't done the math and research to verify. My bet is that you have.

I love it...but i would use a simple bicycle chain drive for less friction. Unfortunately chain drives are noisy especially when the load is in overdrive as you are doing, you would want nylon sprockets on the driven side. (Not the drivers). Maybe a toothed timing belt would be better so it doesn't have to be tightened so tight? Or a combination of the 2? Thanks for posting, i have a similar project brewing with my steam donkey engine, this is an inspiration.👍
@georgeblack5892 ай бұрын
I would really second the use of chain. I have a large steam driven 8" Tesla turbine, and the drag between the blower and pumps that it's running were really dramatic with a v-belt. Swapping to a chain drive made everything run without issue.
@rogueart77062 ай бұрын
@georgeblack589 👍Tesla turbine👍
@rogueart77062 ай бұрын
@@georgeblack589 in a perfect world it would have silent chains like on my old lathe but that probably cost an arm and 2 legs. However, I personally acquired a motorcycle gearbox and I am planning to use it on my steam donkey generator by switching the input/output so the 4 speeds are overdriven...but I am betting it's gonna be quite noisy in overdrive...probably sound like an old fire siren.😃
@georgeblack5892 ай бұрын
@@rogueart7706 Very cool! Straight cut gearbox? I'm working on a large steam engine right now, and the tesla turbine is part of the boiler blower/fuel pump. The engine itself is a 2 cylinder flat engine with a 5.5" bore and 11" stroke. I was just working on the camshafts today. Hopefully I'll fire it up on compressed air soon.

I've been in solar since 2006. My first job was in an off-grid office powered by solar, microhydro and a generator. We did a lot of work for people who were convinced the world was just about to end. They always got a battery bank and a gasoline generator, but no solar. It got me thinking about true "off-grid" scenarios where you can't drive down to the gas station to get more fuel for your generator in the middle of winter when your solar isn't fully recharging the batteries. I looked into some antique steam engines on various off-grid forums that existed back then, but our company didn't want to get into steam power. Great to see projects like this. If I even decide to get an off-grid property, this is what I'm getting instead of a Honda generator.

@mrsentinel49112 ай бұрын
@@rossbendixen Yes. If you can run that steam engine at 100 RPM and the machine a little above synchronous, then you should be good to go. 100 RPM on the engine output shaft should be perfect.
