After growing up and experiencing life a little more I now understand this scene, and I also understand why she wasn't staying on the ship anymore at the beginning of Serenity.

This was the first time I've ever seen anything from Firefly even though I didn't watch the series and I wasn't familiar with the characters I could already tell that they were in love with each other because of the fact that Mal hooked up with Inara's friend. Inara handle the situation like a boss she kept it classy she kept it cute when in his presence and when she had a moment herself she cried her eyes and heart out seeing her crying broke my heart also.

I discovered Firefly series years after it came out, and really enjoyed it. But THIS scene is one of my most favorite movie scenes OF ALL MOVIES of all times for the genuine true human nature that is shown.

I don't know you Roger, but I wholeheartedly agree. I really enjoyed this series that I discovered long after it was popular, but to me this was the absolute most moving moment in the whole science fiction series of Firefly.

One of his major character flaws is his ego which is part of the entertainment and gives him his bravado but also his ego is too big to handle the idea of being in a relationship with a prostitute but yes as everyone else has said they love eachother very much

They do love each other a lot but mal can't deal with her job, he can't see her with somebody else and inara knows that but she can't lose her job. That's why they can confess their feelings to one another 💔

+Meop79 That's precisely the point. You should read her testimony (linked in the description). It's supposed to sound sad. The profound nature of joy is that we can have it in the midst of heartache and sadness. Read the story, then listen again with open ears. You'll hear something amazing.

I absolutely adore this song. The somber nature of the piano contrasts beautifully with her words. I think so often I forget joy happens even in the midst of struggles and pain. But the beauty of God's love, the beauty of Christ's sacrifice, is that we can still find joy. Thank you CXVI for reminding me of that.

I prefer the version on the site, the album version, that ends with "When peace like a river attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll. Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, 'It is well, it is well with my soul.'" I don't know how many times of listening to this it will take for me to not choke up and weep.
