We played this in my senior honor band and I got to play the oboe solo. Never been so nervous, ha! I love this song and think about it a lot. Thankful for good recordings like this to bring back good memories. The ending of this song gets me everytime.

One of the most memorable ensemble participations for me in a lifetime of music. I was the pianist (no percussion nor harp for my part, and no chorus). Also one of the most difficult. Practiced my butt off for the rhythmic challenges. The Santa Cruz City Band (CA), mostly non-professionals, also worked madly to play this well. A respectable performance. And what a rush! Still stirs my blood when I hear it. Thank your for posting this!

Beautifully done BUT: When at age 50 Cohen first recorded the song, he described it as "rather joyous", and said that it came from "a desire to affirm my faith in life, not in some formal religious way, but with enthusiasm, with emotion." He later said "there is a religious hallelujah, but there are many other ones.
