Love his concept. It's better to have a fairly good understanding of something and be able to explain it where it's digestible then to memorize a formula.

Good god man! What you say at 5:55 is the friggin answer. Stop your babbling. You make no sense. This is about as clear as mud. All you needed to say was what you said at 5:55 . Thanks for wasting my time !

Oooo i think im kinda getting it. You are saving one number that should be complementary to the rest of the numbers, which are the numbers that are free to vary. So it's like we're only computing for those numbers that are free to vary, because the last number should always be reserved? Follow up question is: do we need to add that number again into the final answer of our computation? I don't know for what sense, but i just feel like it's wrong to minus 1 with a purpose of securing 0 (for instance) without adding it again later.

Learned this in my intro stats class years ago (only to inevitably forget) and finally revisiting data literacy with research, and this was immensely helpful in relearning the fundamental concept - Thank you so much!

How to make it graph using df only?
@pmarcum71462 жыл бұрын
Sounds like reason for the "-1" boils down to: "we need to make the denominator smaller in order to get a bigger number for variance, in order to account for the sub-sample used for the statistics possibly not representing the full sample." If this reason is the only one, then why not make the denominator even smaller by using "N-2", or even "N-3" and so on? The "-1" is rather arbitrary, if the only reason for using "-1" is the reason that I summarized above. I don't feel as if you have explained why we use the "1" in particular ... what you've explained is that by making the denominator smaller, we get a bigger number for variance. Is there a mathematical proof demonstrating that the inclusion of "-1" for statistics applied to a sub-sample perfectly accounts for the "just using N" variance that would be computed on the full sample? That proof is what I was hoping I would see here!

Thanks for sharing this video! Now I understand the df except for, how if you have 15 or 25 sets of numbers instead 3? How would we find the df?
@demonika20602 жыл бұрын
well the formula is constant. is n-1. So 15 will have a df of 14 and 25 will have a df of 24
