Great work Rishikesh and Filippo. Gutted we haven't yet delivered you a reliable enough economic model of a rotary system. The tether O&M will likely be a significant differentiator. Working on it.

Great to see a more complete tether actuation working. Guessing there must be a little but worthwhile line drag penalty from using the mixer pulleys with dual lines.

Hard to make out the launch method; the vague figure behind the kite suggests a Manual Launch. Note the curious "Reverse-Eight" flight pattern, given a power kite's natural passive figure-eight motion.

So good to hear the importance of the difference between community consultation and community engagement. Far too often a public consultation is just used as a tick box exercise to push an agenda

Very inefficient and a gimmick. You'd get more and spend less on a small 10kw turbine.

You can place a pre-order here: thekitepower.com/preorder/. Kitepower is a spin-off (2016) from the university research group. Their Falcon 100 kW system (60 m2 kite) is currently being tested in the Netherlands.

@@Laddermill - how much are estimated cost ?
@Laddermill
@Laddermill Жыл бұрын
@@grip-engineeringthumlergmb7178 The 100 kW unit costs €180k. Note that these costs are for (very) small series production, basically prototyping, not including any benefits of producing a larger series. I should also add that the 100 kW unit is not what the video depicts. The video is about the 20 kW R&D platform of TU Delft that we operated between 2010 and 2015, using a 25 m2 kite and a 20 kW generator, producing 7 kW electrical power at nominal conditions. The video shows the 2012 demonstration of fully-automatic energy harvesting at Rotterdam harbor. The spin-off company Kitepower is marketing a 100 kW solution with a 60 m2 kite and a 160 kW generator.

which source of energy would be used to retrieve the kite? where does it come from?
@Laddermill
@Laddermill Жыл бұрын
That depends on the energy storage technology that is implemented. Some systems use Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, and some use super-capacitors to buffer the energy over a pumping cycle (alternating reel-out and reel-in phases). But one can also think of flywheel storage of mechanical energy. This video is quite old. Check out our newer videos, e.g. this one kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5q8qnaYat1lfqM

Hi, thank you for your interest. The simulation model was developed in MD Adams, using a custom developed aerodynamic load model. More information here: J. Breukels, R. Schmehl, W.J. Ockels: "Aeroelastic Simulation of Flexible Membrane Wings based on Multibody System Dynamics". In: U. Ahrens, M. Diehl, R. Schmehl (eds.) "Airborne Wind Energy". Springer, Berlin Heidelberg, 2013. doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-39965-7_16 J. Breukels: "An engineering methodology for kite design". PhD thesis, Delft University of Technology, 2011. repository.tudelft.nl/islandora/object/uuid:cdece38a-1f13-47cc-b277-ed64fdda7cdf/datastream/OBJ/download This toolbox will not work anymore. Note that we are currently improving this (already more than 10 year old) framework within a starting PhD project. This is a Python-based solver, combining a particle system model with a vortex step method (a lifting line type of method). First results are very promising.

@Laddermill

See my other comment. The Kite Simulation Toolbox was developed in the frame of Jeroen Breukels dissertation. Find it here: www.kitepower.eu/publications.html It was implemented in in the multi-body solver MD Adams with a scripting layer for the aerodynamic load model. There have been a number of other tools developed since then. Very recently this one github.com/aenarete/KiteSimulators.jl

@@Laddermill Thank you for your reply. I am familiar with Kite Simulator. The main advantage of ADAMS modelling compared with one-point and four-point masses models introduced in the kite simulator might be attitude dynamic and the more realistic steering inputs. BTW, It looks aged, and there should be a reason for this research that no one continues working on it.

@siesstad
@siesstad 6 жыл бұрын
You don't need a bigger kite to prove and improve the working principle. In a test phase you would only make it more expensive and dangerous. I do kitesurfing myself and despite what Wubbo is saying, 14m is bigger than most kitesurfers use in those winds (judging by the wind mills and everyone's hair). A bigger kite could not be manually kept under control anymore on the ground.
