This IS the place to go during peak Fall colors. The ride along the Fox River, especially in the open-side caboose, is a great and inexpensive experience. Great for photos.

This train line is consistantly ranked as THE worst in the whole country haha. Tho now it got better: most trains were replaced with new ones, tracks and stations have been modernized, and they are planning to transform it into a subway line.

I used to catch the electric train from Oxford Road to Altrincham which regularly left at the same time as Seahorse on the Buxton so we got a good view

It is my childhood area and the house where I used to live. I can remember sound of trams in curves in each silent morning in 70s. Great memories. Just 30m ahead is another smaller place for trams...very tiny place. Marcin, Leeds, UK now.

Thanks for sharing this. In some ways this is better than the cine recordings that there are. Its great to hear what it would have been like to travel on one of these trams.

I would often pop into Manchester Central after school to see Seahorse. The usual driver was a well read man and introduced me to the book The Manchester Man. I was always invited onto the footplate and enjoyed the tales of the crew. The loco was looked after by the Buxton shed who kept her reasonably clean in spite of her deteriorating mechanical condition. (The fireman told me they had to stop for a blow up the previous day and was building a very deep firebed) I believe the shed foreman even had replacement wooden name plates made. I'm just grateful that we can still enjoy the sight and sound of Jubs on the main line.

This isn't how the trackage always was at that junction. It's a little hard to visualize, but using the current location of the tower for reference - being at the northwest corner of the diamonds: The east-west track furthest south of the tower did not used to be there through the crossings. And the north-south track nearest the tower did not go through the crossings. This meant, for example, that the Lake Street L coming to Chicago from the west, had no choice but to turn to the right (south) and go down Wells street. Long ago, after it circled the loop, it went back west. With the trackage changes, new routings were made possible. For example, now the "Lake Street L" (called "The Green Line now) comes from the west and goes straight through the Tower 18 crossings on the track that is now there to the top right corner of "The Loop" and then turns south to Ashland/63rd. Long ago, you would have had to transfer trains to do that. There were similar limitations to how other routes could work back then, also. And back then, the tower was located in the middle of things and not off to the side. It was located where those two new tracks now cross. So, it had to be moved out of the way to where it is now.
