02:33 Just as a point, those buildings aren't colonial. The golden period of Merida architecture happened 80 years after the end of the colonial period and Mexico was it's own country. Most of the buildings downtown that are so beautiful now didn't look like that when they were built, they were simple buildings then and in the late 1800's were "remodeled" will all of the ornamentation that was popular during the late 1800's. The massive mansions on Paseo de Montejo are definitely not colonial as they were built 380 years after the founding of Merida and well into the 20th century. This doesn't mean that abject wealth doesn't have an ugly side, it does but it didn't have to do with colonization in their case. 09:55 You are correct, the Museo de Gastronomy de Yucateca is not something locals would go to. You can get better versions of this food in any economica for 50 pesos. For instance the best Lechon in the city is at a stand in a parque and they're there only in the morning. The best Cochinita Pibil is at a person's house and they only cook it on Sundays and they're sold out by 10. However, if you want to have a reasonable representation of Yucateco food Museo de Gastronomia Yucateca isn't a bad place to do it. The environment is pleasant and clean and the food isn't bad. 13:13 We used Merida as a central hub to visit the Ruta Puuc and spent most of the time in Merida. We returned to the states, sold or gave away everything we didn't want to keep and moved to Merida. That was some years ago and we've never left. This happens. 15:01 You don't need a work VISA, you can stay for up to 180 days on your passport. A lot of people start out this way before proceeding onto Residence VISAs and in some cases citizenship. The one thing that always stays the with Merida is that nothing stays the same. You made this video 1 year ago from my commenting and the city has changed a lot in that year. The city has bought 1300 new modern, buses, many electric or hybrid, our massive Parque la Plancha opened, we got a new 1500 km eco friendly train system in the Yucatan and Merida has 2 train stations on each end, the airport got remodeled, bike paths went in everywhere, pedestrian crossing lights etc.. Calle 47 is now pedestrian only and connects Pase de Montejo and La Plancha and is lined with restaurants (expensive) and is beautiful. For a 480 year old city it sure changes fast. Cheers!

Too bad Seattle has become a war zone. There are literally armed guards by nearly every storefront. Who really cares how good the food here is when you’re getting stalked by some fentanyl crazed homeless guy? Oh also it’s insanely pricey.

7000 tres were destroyed and underground spring water was contaminated along the Mayan Riviera Nobody, never, asked for the construction of this train. It was just a "wet dream" that former president López Obrador had so that his ugly ranch in Palenque could have a nearby train station.

Our road trip through Mexico is unforgettable....as a nightmare. Horrible roads did damage to our car, poor quality gasoline damaged the engine, cheaters at Pemex stations constantly try to steal, outrageous insurance costs for poor coverage, dangerous Mexican drivers, cops demanding bribes at every opportunity.

Thanks for all the helpful tips! Which service provider do you use on your phone when stateside? Still google fi? And would really appreciate it if you could show the whole ATM experience that everyone talks about how you’re supposed to decline the initial conversion rate. It would be helpful to see the screen, im assuming it’s all in spanish (?), and what exactly happens after that, eg do you have to accept the second step/screen? Thanks!!

Hey! Thanks so much for watching. To answer your questions, yes, we're still on GoogleFi. As far as the ATMs go, most have an English setting you can click (or we will pull out our phone and use Google Translator). Honestly, it's very much like a normal ATM. The conversion rate you're talking about typically pops up at stores and it'll ask if you want to pay USD or MXN...always choose MXN. Hope this helps!

Those "influencers" wannabe environmentalists such as Eugenio Derbez just riding the d of what the media says.. just because it's trending and will give them views.. but when did they talk about the destruction of 20-30 years + of places nearby like CALICO or the turistic hotel / attraction XCARET or the HOTEL INDUSTRY? When this project was wanted for most, helps local economy and turism, transportation, gives jobs, and created more protection of natural areas, the largest reforestation program in the world, created infrastructure and more transportation for locals to reach the mayan train (eg. Merida u find the vayven electric train), invested money to repair the ancient sites and create museums, recovered thousands of ancient pieces, etc...

What do you guys do with your leftovers, lol! That can be a problem when traveling. I haven't been to Lou Mitchells in probably 35 years, but it is as you describe. Back then, Lou was still alive and on busy days would greet his customers at the door with a big smile and give them little boxes of Milk Duds, lol. Why Milk Duds? I don't know, but Lou was an endearing character. As a kid, I was into pancakes, and I recall that I didn't like them at Lou Mitchell's.....really heavy and not to my sophisticated youngster taste, lol. But the French Toast is solid, and I recall their omelet with broccoli and cheese was very good and impossible to finish. In any future visits I'd encourage you to seek out some of Chicago's Italian restaurants, such as La Scarola on Grand Ave., some excellent and inexpensive Greek Gyros pita sandwiches at Zeus in the Greektown area, La Creperie on N. Clark Street, supposedly the oldest creperie in the U.S., some excellent BBQ at Green Street Meats near W. Randolph in a very cool venue, and some very tasty thin-medium pizza at Pizano's Pizza at the Gold Coast location. I'm sure many Chicago area residents can give you lots of other recommendations. If possible, try to stay off the tourist path as much as possible.
