My Grandpa worked down in the pits under the engines in a roundhouse in Salem, Va. as a machinist. I have his work diary of the engines he worked on and his rr hat that he wore turned around backwards to get oil/grease off his neck.

Possibly the sister or cousin of BSI Class 0-4-0 #9 from Denton, NC. She’s also a Porter locomotive, but was built in 1942

Sorry, but I look at photos of these L1’s and think to myself, back in the day they should not have taken the cutting torches to all of the Chesapeake and Ohio M1’s, at least one should have been saved for the B&O museum. In my opinion there was no comparison between the tiny M1 and the massive steam turbine L1’s and tenders.

Actually there is near zero maintenance for the turn table equipment. Just two cheap maybe 12-15 inch internal dia bearings. Since it’s a low rpm machine the bearings will last forever. It’s probably already 200-300 years old.

I seriously MUST HAPPILY point out that I've witnessed the turntable in the roundhouse @ the B & O Railroad Museum in Baltimore in Maryland in action with my own official Dad named Preston some years ago as they were turning a piece of rolling stock of rolling stock on it that's basically known as a caboose here in the U S A while people in the U K identified that piece of rolling stock as a brake van!

Im reading the comments and a lot of people really want 490 to run. There is a lot more that goes into that than just getting it to run. Where is it gonna run? Who is gonna run it? Who is going to find the people to make new parts when needed, where the heck is the money coming from. And on and on. 490 aint running again. Hate to burst the bubble. You need people with millions and millions of dollars to get something like that off the ground. Not every single last steam engine has to run again either. I I know most of the stuff in the PRR legally cannot ever run again due to their rules regarding preservation. People should look into the bigger picture. Ed Dickens explained what it took to make the Big Boy run again, go watch that video, its quite informative on what needs to happen when a steam engine is chosen to be run again

Though her scheme was originally Orange when streamlined just because orange is my favorite color, but 490 can keep the yellow paint being the only yellow steam engine, because who needs Orange boilered locomotives when I already have a Orange skirted 4-8-4 that is Daylight 4449 when it reminded me of J class 611 being a red skirted 4-8-4, they along with yellow skirted NC&StL 576, and green skirted CNR 6400 were known as "colorful skirted 4-8-4's" or "Rainbow skirted 4-8-4's".

Change the rear tires on your tractors to something like a turf tread so you have less slippage on your wood and cement.

When I was a kid the C & O used to use a GP7 to switch out cars at Heiner’s Bakery in Huntington, WV. Sometimes the engineer would have us climb up in the cab and he’d talk to us about railroading and let us blow the horn. Hearing that sound brings back a lot of fond memories.

This was the earliest E-unit diesel model built in 1937, these EA units were the B&O's first passenger diesels and the "E units" gained higher publicity after the late 1930s. It is a shame however that locomotive 51 doesn't have it's "B unit" preserved with it, I would like to see both the A and B units joined together for a matching EA/ EB pair set of locomotives. It is wonderful to see that a late 1930s model passenger diesel has been preserved for public display.
