Hi there, Is that on the grasshopper.? Looking at buying one but a bit concerned about its ability to flare on landing? Any help or advice would be much appreciated thank you

Yeah, no problem. For learning on, they are very stable and safe and for a safe hike and fly. However, there are a few gotchas. I would say flaring is less of a concern as it is a fairly slow wing (but does flare just fine), however when I was learning, I got dragged alot with it - mostly because I hadn't realised that due to the anti stall on the brake lines, it's very hard to get it back onto the ground in a wind after landing and tends to stick back just enough to cause a drag - that might say more about my ability when learning than the wing. I doubt I'd have that problem now (just basically have to use C's to get it down). It can also be hard to pin down in higher winds on launch (when on the C's it tends to 'slip' along the ground and doesn't pin down very well). It is a very safe wing though and confidence building in the sky. If you're looking for an A wing after having just passed out though or looking for something to learn on, definitely listen to your instructors advice - they'll know better than me.

@@jonbartlam thanks for that. I primarily fancied it for a easy lightweight h&f wing but I think I'll stick to double skin. I don't fancy being dragged off a cliff edge lol. Thanks again tho 👍

@@juliandolman9550 if you've the experience and want single skin then niviuk skin wings are great and don't suffer the same issues. If you definitely want a versatile double, check out skywalks tonic 2. Not had chance to fly it as hike and fly yet but I've flown it at 25mph winds fine and it's nice and light. Great fun wing.

Hi mate, awesome flights in wales, hoping to do them soon! Looking at getting hike/climb and fly wing, thinking of tonic or skin, how do there pack sizes compare? Haven’t flown a single skin, how does performance compare as well? Cheers

How do you find this wing mate?
@jonbartlam
@jonbartlam 4 жыл бұрын
It's a nice wing, excellent hike and fly wing and soars admirably for a single. I'd definately recommend being over mid way on the weight range though as it doesn't penetrate as well on the lower end (another pilot I know sits on the opposite end than me and got much better performance). I've recently sold it in preference of a Skywalk Tonka 2 to straddle hike and fly and high wind days which compliments my main wing a bit better. For the money and to compliment a main wing, I'd pick the tonic hands down. For a main wing you want to double for hike and flies, you could do worse for sure.

@@jonbartlam you should get a mini wing / speed wing for higher winds mate. Great tools!

@@DansEscapades The tonic 2's a miniwing. There's a video on here of Mark Leavesley having a go on mine over Black knoll in 30mph winds if your interested. Wouldn't dare have done it myself! kzbin.info/www/bejne/lX-ciGWdhMiLpJo Edit: oh and you're absolutely right. I love it to bits!

Any advice on where's best to land?
@jonbartlam
@jonbartlam 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry about delay. Been on holiday. There is no official bottom landing. You can fly following the path you walk up to a large grassy area about halfway down the mountain though which is spot on and where the guide says to land.

Hello :) how is the Skin 2 in the air?, have U tried maybe the Independence Tensing?...I want to buy new wing for hike&fly but I dint decided yet which one is better...
@jonbartlam
@jonbartlam 5 жыл бұрын
Not flown the tensing but did start out on the grasshopper. The two aren't really comparible though. The skin 2 in the vid is a 20 so I'm very light on it and not technically certified (the 18 is en b though). It's a solid, very fun wing and generally stable but there are a few things to note - in turbulence the tips can 'flap' which is disconcerting. It's a good way to go though imo. Still, I would consider the skyman sir Edmond race too - I know the chap who taught me (mark leavesley) just bought one and I must say looks good.

I gonna talk with the lokal dealer about the Skyman S.E Race...with the A.R 6.01 can be a awesome wing...but the materials what they use Dominico D10 making me little bit skeptical...
