That's what I thought so I put in a new 180, no change so I bought a better quality 195. When I pulled the new 180 it was failed open. With the 195 the temp gets up to about 110 which matches pretty close to what my IR thermometer reads when I point it at the thermostat housing. I have a new clutch for the fan that I hope to put in this weekend. Its' better than over heating but not helpful when defrosting the windows.

Excellent video. Were you able to track down the culprit? I did this exercise in the last house we lived in. It was the kitchen breaker, and specifically the refrigerator. It had an off-line switcher creating the 12Vdc that powered the fridge's electronics. It was super dirty and cheap. I ordered a replacement controller board for the fridge and hacked the board, changing the off-line switcher to a transformer and linear power supply., then swapped out the boards and was noise free! Now I need to do the same exercise in our current house.
@AnthonyComptonАй бұрын
Fortunately this turned out to be power strips removed or replaced with better quality units and it's not bad for city life.

I wonder where the temperature sensor(s) is for this function. Could be an actual temp sensor chip, like an LM35, or just a PN junction. Many FPGAs and Processors have built in sensors. Too bad the radio doesn't have a way to view the readings.

I found where the fan command comes from; there's a D/A, Q4041 that sends signal "FAN" to an opamp, Q4071 that looks like its setting up a current source with transistors Q4078 & Q4021. This drives pin 2 of the fan connector, J4006. (Correct me if I'm wrong). The other half of opamp, Q4071 is not used. I still can't find where the temperature sense comes from.
@PacTel543213 ай бұрын
Last entry: there are two thermistors. TH4003 looks like it's temperature compensation for bias voltage. TH4001 seems to be the one that the fan circuit uses. It is located on a corner of the PA board and its output feeds an analog input of the microcontroller, which then outputs to a D/A and controls the fan. If you could probe test point TP4003, you could know at what temperature the fan turns on and then make an intelligent decision with the fan menu item.

You can replace the fan with a noctua fan, much better anyways.
@@Helix_22 This noctua has half of static pressure of the original Panasonic ASFP60371 fan. Not sure how much it matters in 710 construction and air flow resistance.

I set mine to 185 a while ago and have been happily running FT8 at about 80 watts, although I'm a very "light" user of FT8 and never call CQ. The fan still comes on - even when just on receive - but not as often as before. I guess the bottom line is, if you can't afford to replace your finals you shouldn't mess with replacement fans or service menus, but for most hams this is a moot point.

Is some radio disassembly required to replace the fan? (warranty stickers here). Edit: The connector is close to fan hole but the access is quite hard and it will be very hard to unplug it thru fan hole. From my testing at least. So yes, removing top cover and then internal metal cover will be required + changing connector on noctua. Edit2: I also conclude that this Noctua is not enough. Original barely is able to cool the thing down while transmitting and Noctua has two times worse static pressure parameter than original Panasonic.

I have seen more than a few videos where people put the Yaesu radios into service or calibration mode. I understand if you are benching the radio for a tune -up or after the replacement of finals, etc. but I have seen 3 people already in my area who have done this but never noted the settings before tinkering.... saving the radio memory onto the SD card or in the case of say a 991/a saving to an RT systems file does not save these configuration settings. The second you see the screen where you can make changes, snap a pic, write it down or both. Yaesu will take a long time to send it back to you if you mess it up and it costs a bit to get that done. Just my 2 cents for for what its worth.
@AnthonyCompton7 ай бұрын
No argument about recording the settings, my original reason for the video was to have record of all the settings. It's worth noting that the radio backup does not include the service menu settings. The easy way to get those on a 710 is to do a video capture as you scroll through the settings.

Thanks for posting this. I have the loud fan issue. Its louder than the cheap power supply I use as a back-up. Runs even when sitting idle for about 20 minutes then quits. Then starts again 5 minutes later. Quite annoying. My IC-7300 and ft-891 do not have this issue. Buddy of mine has the same issue as you . He wrote Yaesu and has received no reply. This was 2 weeks ago. I believe that Yaesu is aware of the problem but simply won't directly address it yet. I'll be watching for updates.
@AnthonyCompton11 ай бұрын
If you get a moment, maybe post a video of what your fan sounds like. I hope to collect some data this week as well as make a short video of what my fan sounds like from the front and back. Even my FT-891 is quiet on RX and it has much less heat case to absorb the heat. I know it's picky but something is not correct.
