Do you keep this worm bin outdoors?
@jerseyworms
@jerseyworms Күн бұрын
Not right now. Temps are down to about 25-35° last few weeks. When I have bigger systems it’s possible to do so. Your internal temp needs to be warm enough otherwise they’ll freeze. You can raise temps in an outdoor bin by thickening the bedding and adding compost material so it will heat up.

I lasted only two weeks with the buckets 😂 I immediately knew i wanted to go big, so now i have one 30-gallon bin and its going well. They are reproducing rapidly in a bed of leaf mold!

I just added a bunch of chopped leaves to all of my worm bins!! 🍁 🪱 They love that stuff!!!🎉 I got a few more big black bags of leaves to chop... I use a small battery weed wacker and a large planter with thick walls. Im hoping to make enough bedding for a home made 2'X4' CFT. Maybe make a bigger one in the future when needed. We have about 13 bus bins and are running short on space... Still gotta build a shelving system for the smaller bins...🎉

Start composting some leaves early if you can. Add some water and let them sit. They’ll start breaking down before you even start.

Do the leaves heat up? I’m thinking about vermicomposting with leaves also.
@GavinCiccia
@GavinCiccia 8 күн бұрын
Hi, Definitely. Leaves will begin to breakdown pretty quick. In the process the heat will definitely accrue. With leaf-mold based worm bins, you'll need ventilation in the top of the bins for sure. The amount of greenhouse gas that will build up in the beginning will become too much for the worms to handle and they'll look for an escape route!

My Dubia's aren't eating that I know of. I've had them for a week now, from an online order. Adults and baby's. I rarely see them out too. Maybe one at a time. Do they need to adjust? Hopefully I didn't get a sick batch.

Could be temperature based. How warm are they. If it’s cool, they’ll have a slower metabolism. They’ve also just had their world flipped around and have no idea where they are. They’re in hiding. Let them get used to their surroundings. Make sure food is accessible as well. Can they reach it?

Where does one get/how might someone go about creating those sieves you have for separating out various sized dubies so freaking quick and easily? 😍 I have a young female veiled chameleon personally, I’m working to transition her staple feeder from crickets to dubia.. not that she hasn’t had a variety of different foods as she’s grown, just building up that initial bulk of breeding adults to be able to sustain a decent population still

I see a lot of people always saying you should dehydrate and grind up egg shells to aid digestion and in order to make their eggs stronger for a better rate of egg hatches, also coffee has been said to be great for worms as long as they are spent (used already), just some suggestions. If you think that's too expensive or something I suggest talking to customers and neighbors for their spent coffee grounds and egg shells, and asking coffee stands for their coffee waste that they probably have to pay to dispose of anyways. I'm not suggesting that you stop feeding them leaves I'm just suggesting you think about also putting other foods in them. Most leaves and woods can be fed to most species of isopods, but I'd do more research about what specific leaves and woods they can eat but I suggest you look into the isopods business/hobby. They look fun, but I have yet to own any myself so I'd recommend aquarium max I believe is the name of the channel but I'd love to see you get into this stuff more. So far really interesting.

@@jerseyworms Buying commercial chow for the colony the family runs for our beardie breeding project has been getting harder and harder financially. I really need to start experimenting with mixes. I have given them like rolled corn/oats, random stuff they seem to like that I can get "free". I just worry I'll give them something they arent supposed to, or accidently not give them something they need nutritionally. Now if only I could afford the quantities needed to run in the FIL feed mixer. Thanks for the advice.

This all depends on what you start with. This is a breeder bin. I believe around 400 Adult females in this one. If you are starting with around 100 adult females you could see some significant growth pretty quickly.

I don’t think they breed as fast in clear totes, but they end up looking more healthy, and get bigger (because they know when to take a break) and it’s nice to let them know if it’s day or night. Also if you don’t separate the babies from their mom then they end up growing a bit slower, but the babies taken care of grow up to be bigger, and look way healthier, the ones that I separated looked beat up compared to the ones I kept together, and again it’s nicer for them to be kept together.

Leaves have a great chance of increasing mites in a worm bin. Great update. 😎
@jerseyworms
@jerseyworms 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, the best way to prevent this is either A) freeze the leaves for 48+ hours. Or B) put the leaves in a black garbage bag and let it sit in the sun for 24 hours. This will heat it up tremendously and kill the mites inside. The final way is to add Diatomaceous earth to leaves before you wet them.
