Is there a way to trick the original aquarius into doing programmable graphics, like they did with the ZX81? Demo programmers even have got 16 colours 640x480 in CGA using timing tricks? I loved the Aquarius, but it's a shame it didn't have programmable graphics or multi coloured mode. It's a shame none of the chipset or computer manufacturers figured out making an alternative 8 bit pattern striped character set, that can be made by simple hardware mod to use the character number as the bit pattern, and change screen character display start, a simple mod to these sort of character systems, and or colour map address, per display line like the ZX Spectrum does (using timer or interrupt) to get bit mapped, and 64×50 16 colour mode. If only it had had a 80 character mode, some interesting character based graphics could have been made, with the 80 horizontal positions and a character per 2 colours. Anyway to mod or trick the Aquarius to produce 80 columns? The 6845 on the PC and others, really dropped the ball on this. The retro landscape would look a lot different, with such a mode as a suitable cheap substitute for sprites and hires graphics. Even just using a semi graphic block character set like the Aquarius and Commodore had. Thank you.

I remember seeing the Paintbox in the early '80s (maybe at NAB). It was just amazing... so responsive and clean (anti-aliased) ... but it was just a box if you were not an artist 8-). Engineers like me could use it but could never create anything decent! The 'Mirage' was also groundbreaking, and again, TV (especially commercials) of that era is identifiable because of it. Back in the day I designed a clone of the DPE 'Shotbox' (it was easy to reverse engineer the serial protocol). Impressive innovation that moved an industry.

What is this undecipherable t-shirt? One source says it says "Finally I understand this", but maybe that's the greek? And it's a reference to a UNIX context switching function?

Wow, this is one of the greatest computer science related videos I have seen. I started with UNIX late 1980s or something. And worshipped the simple ideas behind it, and thought, these people were smart, they knew what to leave out. Amazing seeing some of my idols in a video! I should see if there's a video soley focused on the Belle chess system. Partly developed by Ken Thompson.

What a fascinating early machine! It seems like the 6800 was quickly sidelined in favor of the 8080, then the Z80 and 6502 (I imagine price was a huge factor there), and it's interesting to see what early micro companies were doing with it, even if they didn't go on to fame and fortune.

I designed quite a few of the Multics machines and cooperation with general electric GECOS. It was a well designed hardware secure operating system. I do also recall time when we ware making in 1950s electric components with in them embedded instructions while we ware just adding mathematical functions to computers. As well I do recall the hardware mark1 and mark2 and their design points also old teleprinters and not just cards but also punch tape as well a time when we add the telegraph connections to the computer to mainframe. There ware special keys to send the written program in telegraph impulses to the machine and on other side reader of the impulses. That is from where the tty multiplexer is borne added from the telephone telegraph AT&T type of things into the computer that more people could send programs or data into. Also then I found way to encode much more information then morsecode that how binary sequences we started using in sending of impulses to the computer mainframe.

The TI-99/4A was the first 16bit personal computer years before the IBM company brought out a home computer and anyway the TMS9900 should have had a 24Bit Address Bus and a 16Bit Data Bus but was not to be but if it had it would have taken off like wildfire.

I disagree that Wikipedia has lost its reputation for false information. I still hear from students who say, "We can't use it as a reliable source in school." Re. Smalltalk-72 Brian is right that it was a combination of influences, which you can read about in Alan Kay's document, "The Early History of Smalltalk." It has some "easter eggs" that refer to Logo, in its syntax, but Lisp was also a major influence (though, I've heard people say Logo is a kind of Lisp). I recognized some Lisp-like things in it. Class definitions seemed like a cross between Lisp macros and Lisp functions. The symbol-binding semantics are just like in Lisp. It has turtle graphics, which is a dead give-away that Logo was a big influence on it.
