Thanks for making such good content. It's a great summary and there are also nice photos. Coincidentally, I also have a D700, M43, and Pentax Q. My go-tos for when I'm going heavy, going light, and almost like I'm carrying nothing respectively. I was going to sell the Pentax Q because I have several cameras but I started to review the photos I had selected from a few years ago and I found many that I had taken with the Pentax Q and the 02 lens and it turns out that I couldn't have taken them with another camera . So now, another Pentax is coming with an 01 and I will soon get the 06, so that I already have a mini Q system. To be honest, sometimes the image quality does not satisfy me (I am used to D700, D3S, EM5) and of course, being such a small sensor, sometimes there is a lot of noise, therefore I use Topaz denoise but with subtlety. I say that it happens "sometimes" because it depends on the light conditions and ISO level, which I prefer not to go above 800. This is especially true in color photos, in black and white the noise generally looks good. In my case I have no problem going with a big camera and having them see that I am taking photographs, well, I can say it now that I live in a safe country where there are no robberies and people don't seem worried about a foreigner taking photos either, but I It does change the equation that with such a small camera no one takes you seriously so everything becomes more relaxed. And another great thing about the camera is that it has two dials, one front and one back, very useful and giving a powerful tactile experience.

The most iconic Nikon cameras involved a direct participation or design of the sensors by Nikon. The Nikon NC81338L is found on the D3 and D700. The Nikon NC81366W was used on the D4, D4s and Df. Sure, other Nikon models use Sony sensors modified by Nikon to their purposes, but the colors of the sensors made by Nikon specifications are something else! Thanks for sharing!

Nope - you can buy a Sony a6000 for a cheaper price which is a far better camera and the body is$ 250 - $350. Couple it with the Sony 16-70 f/4 for another $300 - $350 and you have a far better camera which is smaller and lighter. Best $600 spent for entering photography, IMO, and if you stay with ASP-C that lens works on all Sony ASP-C cameras

I bought this lens 2 weeks ago with pristine optics for the grand sum of $59.00 CAD with free shipping from Japan. It had some play in the focussing ring because tiny locking screw needed tightening, took about 20 seconds to figure that out and adjust it. I tested it on my D850 and I was blown away by the sharpness, contrast and color saturation of the images. This lens is an absolute bargain, you will not be disappointed.

Bought my d700 a month after release in 2008. Haven't used it in ... 3 hours. Used it professionally for 10 years til the d850 came out in 2018. I just showed a 25% crop, less than 4 mp shot 16" print and it was, in my not humble opinion, the best of 20 shots displayed. Now I print to 20" and the d 700 can easily do that especially with topaz gigapixel ai to up scale. Most folks don't print and display on line as what, 3mp? Now the dynamic range of the 850 is way impoved over the d 700 but it worked just fine for me for 10 years. The most important part of the camera is the 12" behind it...Ansel Adams. Learn the craft and you can make fantastic images with a cell phone.

Great to hear from someone who’s used it professionally. I use it now for architectural work but am aware it wouldn’t be the first choice for most people. I still think a good photo is a good photo, even at only 12mp.

Bought mine in 2008 as soon as it was released. Haven't used it in... a day. Now, my d850 is way sharper, way more dynamic range... startling after using the d700 for 10 years. But I recently showed a 16" print of a 25% crop from this camera. It is a work of art, not just some razor sharp piece of crap reproduction of reality. Of course, most of my work these days in in film, 35mm, 645 and 67 but the d 700 still has a place in my camera lineup. My d200, 20 years later value makes it disposable. The D700 still gives more resolution than is needed for the internet.

Great video and I totally agree with you that manual focus slows you down and you’re able to more precisely focus on what you want rather than what you the camera thinks you want. Using the hyper focal distance is also an excellent way of doing street photography as well as nature or landscapes. It’s nice to have both AF and manual focus lenses. AF when you need it and and manual focus when you can take the time. The old AFD Nikkors can be bought pretty cheaply these days with many going mirrorless. Regards Gerry

You’re right this was a classic lens. I bought one for $85 and I put a dandelion chip in it and gave it to my grandson so he could use it on his D 5300 Camera. With a chip on it it works great, although it works good on the 700 as well. I prefer the 75 to 150 series zoom for its lighter weight and its faster aperture. Both of these lenses work well with the 3T or 4T close-up lens because they both have a 52 mm filter size size. Makes macro photography with these lenses a good combination. I don’t know if you’ve done it but you might try putting a focussing screen in your D700. That’s what I did and it makes using those manual focus lenses work much easier. Your videos are excellent with lots of good B-roll. Regards Gerry

Thanks for bringing the Pentax Q family back into the photographic conversation! That was a wonderful video essay on the Q experience. And yes, the Q IS so much fun to use. This in spite of the fact the even the newest member of the family, the Q S-1, is ten years old this year. P.S. I have found a way to turn off the display, though that would not fit my personal use case. On the Q and the Q10, press the INFO button to bring up the Control Panel. If you then press the INFO button to exit the Control Panel, the camera exits the CP AND turns off the display. Press the INFO button again and the standard display returns. Also, if you turn off the camera with the display turned off, the display will turn back on when you turn the camera on again. For the Q7 and the Q S-1, the only difference is that if you exit the Control Panel by pressing the INFO button, you are greeted by three icons overlayed over the display. From left to right the choices are: 1) Standard Information Display, 2) No Information Display, and 3) Display Off. Pick one, press OK, and voilà! Pretty cool, eh? Oh, and if you have previously turned on the levels and/or the histogram in the menus, you still get them with either option 1 or even option 2.
