Same happens with lossy music formats like mp3 as well as lossy picture formats that have been saved over and over again until it’s a blurry mess! It’s why I hate lossy formats; it’s the year 2024 and they should be eliminated.

There is a game mode on roblox of all things called "starving artist" where you get like a 32x32 grid, to make pixel art on. The creations some of these kids make on there are mind blowing. They get to sell their art to other players for in-game currency. its quite fascinating. I made a few airplane looking ones, and upon learning that once your art is sold, its quite literally removed from your inventory, i decided to keep that one drawing. :)
@japhyriddle4 күн бұрын
That sounds fun. 32x32 was the image size for icons on Macs and Windows machines back in the 80s and 90s. Susan Kare was phenomenal at that res.

Realizing much of what we watched growing up in school were Gen2.. meaning our teachers on movie day were bringing in pirated copies of an original owned by someone in their family.

You know, I think the particular VCR that I used had some issues. Normally, audio stays relatively in tact when making copies.

I know I'm aging myself but wasn't the last "dial" effect just that "tracking" thing you used to be able to do? (I know this video is five years old.)
@japhyriddle5 күн бұрын
Good question. Tracking is a synchronization setting meant to keep the tape speed just right, so that the helical scanning heads read the tape in the perfect spot. If it's not calibrated correctly, the results are mostly extra video noise at either the top or the bottom of the picture. And if it's really far out of whack, the audio tends to go as well. It looks pretty different than what's presented here.

Conspiracy theory humor aside, it’s actually a fascinating setup for a technology enthusiast like myself. From what I’ve read about it: The video cameras used a slow scanning rate of 10 frames per second. Also, these cameras housed Vidicon tube sensors, which leave those streaky trails often referred to as “comet tails”. I actually have some early 70s black and white video cameras that exhibit this. They’re pretty fun to play with. The slow-scan format was used due to the very limited bandwidth and extremely long broadcast distance. On Earth, there wasn’t a good way to convert the slow-scan signal to a normal NTSC signal other than to point a regular broadcast camera at a slow-scan monitor receiving the slow-scan broadcast. So stupid. It was recorded to tape. Those tapes were copied. The originals tapes were overwritten in the 80s, so only the inferior copies exist. The 16mm footage that was shot looks really good though.
@Gromitdog15 күн бұрын
@@japhyriddle Im thinking more the live broadcast where there was no direct feed instead news outlets were instead to aim their cameras at the image projected on a screen. In any event it isn't a preservation method one would expect from man's greatest achievement.
