This came out in a time in which the "Alt Right," which was a term for the briefly unified anti-neocon right wing social movement in the United States, was firmly anti-war and opposed to American interventions in other countries, particularly those in the Middle East, due to their opposition to Israel. This woman grew up surrounded by a family of immigrants, artists, intellectuals and academics in New York. Various family members were influenced by the ideas of Murray Rothbard, Ayn Rand, Milton Friedman and strident anti-communism. To me, it seems highly likely that Angela Keaton is a Jewish woman who has inserted herself into this libertarian movement not because she is opposed to war, but because she did not want the libertarian movement to shift to the right. She goes on to describe the Alt Right as "undesirables." I can only listen to so much of this woman. No wonder so many people left the libertarian movement and joined the Alt Right at the time.

I started watching this channel due to game design, but now I'm more interested in this Judeo-Libertarian Zentrum pipeline. What is even going on here? Also, is that a reference to Hans Hermann Hoppe? This all brings back memories of arguing with anarcho-communists and liberals on the internet over a decade ago. Also, the title reminds me of that catchy song that Jesse Dunstan made a few years ago, "remove in a physical way," which was a parody of "move in mysterious ways."

On one hand, historical realism does not seem to lead to better board wargames. If I recall correctly from a decade ago, the rule change involved choosing roles. The change was that the lead player chose a role. you then went around the table choosing a different role, from the remaining roles, until every player had chose a role. The lead player then rotated, and the new lead had first choice of role. The point of the change and lab exercise was to show how you could test different rules to see which one was better. Most playtesters agreed that the alternate rule, which I may not have described correctly was not as good as the original rule.

Russian organization is complicated, and does not match NATO. For example, it seems that the Russian naval infantry currently has divisions that appear to be divisions. Combined-arms Armies appear to be Western Divisions. Names refer formations not similar to western usage, generally by being smaller. I once had a discussion with, iirc, Frank Chadwick about 1940 Russian armored 'diviziya', and proposed that despite the homophony the unit was a Regiment or brigade, not the division it sounded like.

The biggest weakness of civilian wargames is the ignorance of OOB. Military wargames are staffed as an actual battle would be. In the civilian sector, we try to be everybody from General to Sergeant, which removes possibly the most important aspect of warfare: CCC. There is no practical solution, but it's a noteworthy limitation.
@georgephillies Жыл бұрын
Someplace I will discuss 'who does the player represent'? Is the player one officer, or is the player everyone making decisions on different levels? The choice is related to "Are we trying to simulate a conflict, or are we trying to create an enjoyable game?"
@mjl1966y Жыл бұрын
The greatest tragedy of the American Civil War is the employment of Napoleonic tactics with weapons that had made it obsolete. In principal, not much different than the M-16 analogy. Especially with weapons like the Spencer, line infantry was brutally obsolete.

HAHAHAHA, I love it, and the veiled contempt of it...totally true that a Physics textbook that contains almost nothing new about the work of the last 100 years costs astronomically more than a Game Design book that discusses concepts that have been radically changing over the last 30 years and can be applied to the methodologies of just about any field...

The Russian advantage in Stalingrad with the second edition rules is greatly overstated, though at the high end of player skill balance is improved by adding a few extra turns to the game.

This gentleman reminds me of Br. George Wagner, FSC. He was a genius wargamer and got me interested in wargaming in my freshman tear at St. Joseph HS in Westchester, IL in 1977. This lecture brings back some very good memories!

Panzerblitz was the first real wargame I ever learned - in 1977. I have loved it and Panzer Leader ever since. Our HS wargame "club" was run by a genius Christian Brother. We played with hundreds of units over several tables. He had broken down dozens of game boxes into fully fleshed out divisions, regiments, etc. Hand drawn maps spanned large tables. Really great times! Then we started losing players to a weird sounding game called...Dungeons and Dragons...

Re Theme & Content: Ignore the artwork on the box, etc. PC games were particularly guilty here with beguiling pictures on the package concealing ghastly graphics. Graphics are better now and actually displayed in ads. But you're right that an exciting subject does not automatically lead to an exciting game. Sadly, it's usually the opposite!

Probably, but that is not the point of lectures like these. They're meant to give an overview of the genre and give background to the genre. You frankly don't need to play any of these games to get a basic overview, but your experience with these games can improve the depth that the genre can be taught in the future. You can also trust that he did his due diligence on learning the topic before presenting, as he sourced his material during the lecture. After some quick reading, this guy didn't build his career in teaching game design, but physics and chemistry. This class is likely something the university gave him to lecture, and classes like these do not have the vast pedagogical history of physics or chemistry. The fact these classes exist, though, is a sign of improvement from university systems.
