I used Visicalc on an Atari 800 computer. In 1985 I wrote a graphing program using both basic and assembly to strip out the numbers from Visicalc and graph the data. Made $250 by selling the program to Analog magazine.

Fun video. One topic that you wouldn't have access to is IBM engineering competence. From 85 to 87 I was on the Microsoft OS/2 kernel team doing debugger support and implementing threads (which was way fun). There were about 12 of us on the team and 65ish on IBM's team. We would hire maybe 3 or 4 of them. The kernal was all assemply language. One day a manager, Anthony, emailed a source file that was just submitted by IBM to the kernel code base. A third of the code was all push's and pop's! Which meant the programmer had know confidence in the register usage of the calls. We all had a good laugh. But seriously, I fixed a serous virtual memory bug, documented the fix and submitted it to IBM as it was in their code area. A little later I got asked by a senior IBM "designer" to explain the fix. He clearly didn't know OS fundementals. The work was fun but IBM was an anchor that kept slowing down the Kernel. They sunk their ship.

I finished the rough draft for part 3 this past summer, and then laid it aside for a number of months while I focused on Steve Jobs and Next part 2. Recently I have been working on it again, and its pretty close to being finalized and ready for recording. I do not have a date set when that will happen, but it will come out at some point. Current script is about an hour long and I don't see that changing substantially, so editing will (probably) take less time than part 2 required. Best, Jonathan

It can't just be me, but did anyone else have to crank the volume way up to hear this last part of the series? The first two parts sound great, but this last one sounds like the microphone was at the bottom of a toilet bowl

It's so interesting how an unscrupulous snake oil salesman became fantastically wealthy and morphed into such an honorable, altruistic, humble and selfless visionary dedicated only to the welfare of humanity. But seriously folks, the brashness that it took to take on big blue is quite impressive.

It’s coming, rough draft was completed in summer 2024 and I’ve been slowly working on the final draft the past month. However I am still editing the Steve Jobs and Next part 2 video and I likely won’t be done with it for a few more months. After that I should be free to focus more on RoW part 3. Best regards, Jonathan

With the dead hand of management slowing the pace of innovation, had IBM cornered the PC market, today we'd all be using 486s, VGA cards, 3.5" FDDs and 14.4 kpbs modems.

People might be under the impression that once Windows was released, it took the world by storm, but plenty of users were still using DOS shells like XTree into the late 80s. It really wasn't until 3.1 that Windows started to take over, and not until Win95 that dominance was achieved.

Unfortunately, unless I can figure out how to dramatically speed up my video editing it’s unlikely to be done before mid-2025. The rough draft of the script is done however. Regards, Jonathan

So glad you are enjoying the series! I finished the rough draft script for part 3 like six months ago, but I haven’t had time to finish it and record it since I’ve been focusing on Steve Jobs and Next part 2. I’ll hopefully be able to focusing on part 3 sometime early next year. -Jonathan

Other reviews of Microsoft have just briefly described the fact that Bill Gates mother was on the board of IBM where he got an interview with the board saying that he can make a universal program to work on their computers which he didn't even own and never existed, And he Basically builts everything off of The other OS that he bought. It really feels like he only Made it so far because of his deal with IBM

It seems that your history is 3 years off. I don't remember the 386 hitting the market until 1989. And Windows 3.0 was available around 1990/1991. I remember going to the PC store with a friend to get 3.1 and this was after the first Gulf War, because we got together fir the first time in 10 years from that. war

I swear I never knew I'd learn this much about the history of Windows. It's definitely interesting, how the system was born, how it took its first baby steps and how it evolved into the best selling operating systems ever. Very informative video, you've done great job putting it all together.

I bought the DVD set of the series probably 10 years ago, back when Best Buy actually carried DVDs. Definitely captures a lot of the spirit of the comic strip, while also doing its own thing. Wish we’d gotten more than two seasons

@@AnotherBoringTopic Oh, awesome!! I've got the DVD set too (got mine off Amazon, not sure if it's the same set) Probably one of my favorite shows period, and I agree; I think one or two more seasons would've been perfect
