my university got rid of like six one-credit add-on labs for classes like digital electronics, semiconductor devices, digital systems, Electrical Network analysis and a couple others. and they replaced them with two two-credit stand-alone lab classes called "Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering I and II" they were kinda bullsht because there was so much crammed into each lab that every week we were working on something completely different from the week before. one week we were measuring the mechanical and electrical characteristics of motors and the next week we were designing a differential oscillator with JFETs, then the next week we were implementing a PID controller with op amps. the class was all over the place and took way more of my time to accomplish than a two credit hour course has any right to take.
@GauruvVirk22 күн бұрын
Ya this reminds me of the first half of my senior design class - entire concepts crammed into 1 weekly class session 🫠 For something like a lab to be useful, let alone enjoyable, it needs to be given room to breath (which is unfortunately tough to do in the current school structure)

Re: Unpopular Opinion 2 and the hardness of the classes I have degrees in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and physics. They all are hard but in different ways. Physics is mathematically the hardest, but engineering requires a lot of problem solving, which is difficult as well. EE is mathematically harder than ME, but I wouldn't say it is harder than ME. Some of the ME problems can be quite difficult to solve.

"These things we enjoy only provide fleeting happiness, they don't provide satisfaction." You nailed it, and I love hearing this from someone your age.. The "if it makes you happy" talk was something I frequently heard from my fellow GenXers when I was in my 20s. (Sheryl Crow even had a song with that very title during the mid-90s.) My age group seemed more intent on pursuing happiness rather than seeking accomplishment and fulfillment. It always pissed me off, because I admired the people before me who fought for civil rights or created major industries, but instead saw my cohort becoming a Who Cares generation. Nothing wrong with seeking joy, of course, but it should also be productive and/or enduring. I swear it's the reason disproportionately few people roughly my age serve in the U.S. House and Senate, although a lot of that comes from the number of people born in the 1950s vs. 1970s (the term "baby boom" didn't come from nowhere, after all). Of course, the irony of my standing so high and mighty about it when I was 25 is that my ultimate career choice came from a place of "well, it's fun!" My academic aptitudes were in STEM, where I probably could have or should have been a more productive and useful member of society. 😛

The problem is that companies know they can hire actual talent, and at a cheaper price than at any time in recent history. What... is this video. The entire intro is you trashing one person with almost no applicability to a general audience. No, their Reddit post is probably not written the same as their resume. I'm not sure how you expect a person to write this kind of Reddit post without rambling off their credentials. You're holding an informal, conversational Reddit post up to the same standard as a resume and mocking the person for it, which just feels really gross, especially considering they're a college student who is likely in their early 20s.
@GauruvVirkАй бұрын

Fair - but also this may be the “popular movie” situation. Some people don’t like a lot of popular movies, calling them uninspired/boring - but there is a reason why they are so popular and that’s because they work. I think it’s the same reasoning behind calling stuff “basic” - everyone is doing it so it doesn’t seem special, but everyone is doing it because it works that well
@nickolaiorlov4732Ай бұрын

Don't agree with the statements being made about the person, the expectation of a job after college is completely different from how nice guys act, it changes completely when you treat human beings as things as well not just jobs You talk about the post striking a nerve despite your video being far worse at that given the comments. The entire watch is peppered with unnecessary insults that I can't possibly expect to help anymore improve, they will only end with someone being more stressed and feeling less deserving It's unfortunate that this is true but recruiters that act like you are one of the worst, most corrupt parts of the industry and I can guarantee sometimes it won't matter how good a candidate is, the candidate will not get the job
@GauruvVirkАй бұрын
Ya I agree - some of my commentary was unnecessary and actually probably took away from the actual advice
@kohai-kun9261Ай бұрын
Eeeeeeehhhh.... you're making a TON of assumptions here. I don't disagree that coming off as a self-important twat is about the worst thing you can do as far as getting hired, well, ANYWHERE, goes... that said, the fact of the matter *is* that the job market of today is *not* what so many of us were promised all our lives growing up -- heck, that applies to most aspects of our lived experience. We were told to go to college, get an education, study this and that, join X organization, do Y extracurricular, yadda yadda... that if we did all of those things, that we'd be sitting pretty earning a nice living; that we'd be the bosses of our peers who took the 'easy' route and coasted on the back of their privilege and natural gifts. Anyone with any idea of what's going on around them knows that this objectively isn't the case for the overwhelming majority of us. We were encouraged to work at, say, FANG -- and for what? For more than half of us to get laid off within a few years of work, once all that venture capital ran out and the inherently unsustainable business models had to reckon with that unsustainability? There are a myriad of reasons why an otherwise very qualified and capable candidate ends up recieving seemingly-unending streams of rejections. *Could* it be that they're coming across abrasively in their CVs/Resumes? Certainly (though do you really think NO ONE who would have looked over it would have the mind to point out "hey, you're coming across as a bit of a twat" -- despite that sort of thing being evident enough for you to immediately assume that that's the case). That *could* be the case. But to just start out making that assumption? To essentially go "ah, well, you're probably just a conceited prick and that's why you aren't getting hired"? Idk, man. To me, at least, that smacks of a lack of awareness. It makes you come across as smugly as you assume the person who made the post to be. Like, you aren't saying anything that's necessarily *wrong* per se, but... I dunno. I can't help but feel like there were far better ways to make your point -- ways that wouldn't involve you condescending to someone who's clearly frustrated at the dissonance between what they were led to expect, and what *is*.
@GauruvVirkАй бұрын
Totally agree with you - I think my response had a pretty severe bias because I’ve run into a lot of people in my own life that insist that they are doing *everything* correctly and usually aren’t too open to the idea that they could go about things differently, so some of that frustration came through I also should have gone more into what you are talking about - how there are these set expectations that leave a lot of people despondent when the job search doesn’t pan out as promised And the point about how OP is “not that special”, I probably shoulda focused more on how competitive the market is rather than just digging into them 🥴 But ya overall, should’ve been more tactful in my approach
@PatrikSoundАй бұрын
Pionting out the humility is important because it's the biggest thing the writer can actually do something about. We can't just change the conditions of the market, but we can always work on ourselves.
