Let’s assume all slabs crack (because they do), how does a crack that develops in the slab affect the glue down flooring? Would it not cause a separation in the flooring along the crack?
@GRFlooring
@GRFlooring 18 күн бұрын
@@bigaarmory100 Absolutely, and that crack will most likely shift. With a pressure sensitive installation, you'd heat up the glue, pull the lvp from the affected area. Patch/grind the crack. Then add more glue and reinstall.

How about linoleum? I have a very old house, the subfloor is uneven, there's lino already on the floor but it's old, stained and scratched. I'm thinking of covering it with more lino or even peel and stick vinyl.

The problem with linoleum is the same thing some people like about it- it's cheap and it's soft. Always spend the extra bucks and get vinyl if you want to enjoy the floors. Just my two cents
@GRFlooring
@GRFlooring Ай бұрын
Well, I assume you're talking sheet vinyl? Where it has a later of vinyl and then is paper or foam backing? Or is it actual linoleum, which is a solid material made from linseed and needs to be waxed or sealed every few years? Assuming that it's the former - as long as the existing floor is adhered well (not peeling up or coming loose) then a quick layer of floor patch, and you can go overtop. Don't use peel and stick - I have yet to find one that lasts. The stick just doesn't. ;)

3 questions.does loose lay come in lifelong pre waxed finish or do they need waxing? do they come in 28ml scratch proof wear layer. are they furniture dent proof
@GRFlooring
@GRFlooring 4 ай бұрын
LVP comes completely prefinished and does not require any waxing or recoating. Unfortunately no product is truly scratch proof - while they are very durable and can handle the wear and tear of normal life. As long as the furniture has flooring protectors on the legs, there should be no issues with denting. This is for LVP - now there is a similar product called WPC, and while it is very durable, the core can be pretty soft so that very heavy furniture such as pianos can cause dents/marks.

i have a not-very level at all, but somewhat flat basement im considering flooring for. i like the looselay for the fact of surface. that said, i still want to do an underlayment, for a bit of insulation and a better feel. can you recommend an underlyament and the related glue for looselay ?
@GRFlooring
@GRFlooring 5 ай бұрын
The main underlays used for LVP are not really there for insulation, but more to protect an existing floor - or provide a bit of sound protection (such as in multi level buildings). If you're looking for insulation, you'd probably be wanting to look into the Dricore product, but I cannot say that we have any experience with those.

Regarding humidity, is there an "ideal" time of the year to install a hardwood floor living here in Pennsylvania?
@GRFlooring

We have found that it's far more important that the hardwood be properly acclimatized to the home prior to install. The season doesn't matter as much (other than you don't want to be delivering hardwood when it's raining or extremely wet!

On a large Laminate floor do you need expansion joints ? We are looking at the Mohawk Revwood ?
@GRFlooring
@GRFlooring 6 ай бұрын
Hello! Really depends on the laminate. I would suggest to read through their instructions. Many of the higher end laminates now do not need any expansion joints. We try to err on the side of fewer joints, as worst case you can add them where you need to. Just more work, but makes a better flow in the floor.

Why is vinyl called luxury?
@GRFlooring
@GRFlooring 8 ай бұрын
Good morning! So the industry in it's infinite wisdom uses that term to differentiate from sheet vinyl (usually incorrectly called lino). That being said, there is one manufacturer that is now calling their sheet vinyl - Luxury Sheet Vinyl, which will only add to the confusion!

can you use tis Luxury Vinyl flooring on a floor that is plywood subfloor and has Radiant heat running in the floor?
@GRFlooring

As long as the surface temperatur doesn't exceed 90F, we do quite often. Most newer systems do not exceed the 90F. With that, we install the heat system (usually Ditra Heat) and then skim coat a layer of thinset, to provide a barrier to the floor, and install the floor as normal.

Hello, Michael, I have a concrete floor that is above a an underground garage. I want to install 4mm SPC vinyl that has a foam cushion. Should I install an underlayment(1.5 mm) to insulate from the cold? Or is there a better option?
@GRFlooring
@GRFlooring Ай бұрын
Nooo! Sorry, was logged into another account for a bit - so didn't see that there were comments. Never add another layer of underlay if there is one to the product. It will be too soft and especially with a click system, it will just fall apart with time. I'd get a box of the SPC, lay it out and see how the heat/cold transfers through. If the existing underlay already on the SPC isn't good enough, the only real answer is to add a layer of plywood subfloor to add thermal mass.

No mention of how much further we stretch our resources using engineered wood. In solid flooring 1 board 1 piece of flooring in engineered depending on wear layer you can get 3 or more pieces of flooring out of the same board. The manufacturing of engineered wood is a very exacting labor-intensive process as opposed to strip solid flooring production. Most solid producers can manufacture in 1 day more footage than an engineered plant can make all week. Why most engineered is out of more expensive harder to produce grades and you don't normally find engineered with heavy wear layers out of 2 1/4"- 3 1/4" the plywood and labor costs are too high to compete with solid pricing.

@GRFlooring
@GRFlooring Ай бұрын
There is...ish. The uniclick system allows you to change a board in the middle of the floor using a tool called a Bulldog. But it only works if you've left expansion space around the entire perimeter, doorways and l shaped rooms. Which we haven't done for many years as very few home owners want a bunch of t-molds everywhere. I haven't seen any ability to change boards if it's a droplock system without undoing the floor to a wall. If there is, I would love to see it - as it would save my crews lots of tme, effort and swearing!

I hear a lot of installers dismissing solid wood stating that engineered wood floors have near enough the same thickness of wearable layer as solid. I’ve got a Junckers solid oak floor that needs replacing due to water damage and I’m looking at a high-end engineered oak floor that has a 6mm wear layer of high quality oak. I’ve just measured an offcut for our Junckers solid floor and the thickness between surface and tongue or groove is 10mm. That’s still a big difference (> 40%), so all floors are definitely not made equal and you should check what you’re actually comparing. And for reference, I’ve completely sanded my solid oak floor twice in the past 25 years.

Yeah. From we have found (and take this like everything - with a grain of salt) they say that they are waterproof. From what we have found, they do absorb water, and most then when away from the source of water will go down. The problem is that if you walk and or move furniture while it’s swollen, you have a very good chance of damaging the board. Just our two cents
