Does kangaroo hide ever come thick enough to make a knife sheath with?
@DavidMorganLLC
@DavidMorganLLC 9 ай бұрын
I don't think so based on the knife sheeths I've seen that are always quite thick but also stiff so that the pocket doesn't collapse. I've never seen kangaroo leather near the thickness of a US nickel. I hope this helps, Will

What kind of cotter pin is it? Is it bought from a sewing store?
@DavidMorganLLC
@DavidMorganLLC 10 ай бұрын
We are using 1/16th inch x 3/4 inch 18-8 stainless steel cotter pins from an auto supply store, the catch is they come in 100 piece boxes. Hopefully you can find a hardware store or automotive store that will break the packs up. By the way I've tried to find a more malleable pin but aluminum is too brittle. Another thought, if you could find the write gauge of copper wire you might use an inch or two to fashion a loop and to put your string through and then poke the ends up, carefully, between the sweatband and body depending on how closely they are stitched together.

@@DavidMorganLLC I saw a video from "hats by the hundred"(may have gotten that slightly wrong) it you use the strap that barmah sells the metal part at the end has a sharp end that you push thru between the sweatband and the hat. It looks fairly simple on their video

We should make a video on how to do that. We recommend spot stitching the band to the hat n a few places around the crown.

@DavidMorganLLC
@DavidMorganLLC Жыл бұрын
First hat seen is the Akubra Cattleman, second gray hat with wide band is the discontinued Squatter, packing marks are being removed from an Akubra Snowy River, then it is back to the Cattleman being brushed and showing the water on top of the hat.

How and where can I buy a replica or reproduction of the WW1 and WW2 Australian Army Slouch hat?

The current production is much the same as the old but you might try ebay for a really old hat and I know you can find used rising sun badges on ebay.

What's interesting is that the Akubra factory says the process of bashing and shaping the hat was lost to newer generations in the late 1950s. As a result, the factory had to invest in machines that could do it on a large scale and there are staff who do nothing but shape the hat for the customers.
@DavidMorganLLC
@DavidMorganLLC Жыл бұрын
True that hat bashing is a rare art but I am all but positive that all of the hats Akubra makes have machine pressed brim and crown shapes when the crowns are bashed.

What Scout shrinkage? Some australian stores say to buy a size bigger to allow shrinkage and adjust to your head, looking to buy a cattleman from your store online that's why I ask. Also, the Australian cattlman doesnt have a liner but seems the ones you sell do, Can you tell me why? I really appreciate your time.
@DavidMorganLLC
@DavidMorganLLC 2 жыл бұрын
We believe in our sizing chart that we detail on www.davidmorgan.com/shop-content/hatsizing/ That said fur felt hats with leather sweatbands do tend to shrink rather than grow over time. I think it depends on humidity and temperature changes and how often you wear the hat which for most keeps the sweatband oiled. A whole size up is too much in my opinion. After measuring, if you are very close to the next size up or down ask us to pick a larger or a smaller sized hat in that particular size, we can usually compare several and give you the one that is looser or tighter, they all vary. We order Cattleman with linings, but sometimes a production note may get crossed and Covid has changed some things too. I hope this helps - Will

Tractor supply has some straws I like, but their shape is round. Think what I'll do is get one, bring it home, steam it and gently pull in the front and back. Thanks also for showing me how to select a proper fit. Putting the hat on and pressing on the sides will tell me everything I need to know. Thanks for your short and poiniant vid. 🤠

Do NOT use a razor blade to cut the old band off!! This is a recipe for disaster in the form of a cut hat. Instead, use child-safe cuticle scissors with nice rounded edges. Slip the scissors into the band and snip the old stitching. No chance of puncturing the hat, since there’s nothing with a sharp blade being used.

After seeing this video I ordered a Cattleman from your store last week. I really love the hat on the top shelf right side next to the Akubra sign. It appears to have a telescope crown. Is it still available? Thanks.
@DavidMorganLLC
@DavidMorganLLC 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your purchase! The only hat with a telescope crown we carried regularly in my memory was the boss but we did for a time at least wholesale the Flinders which has that round crown and the band might have been a match. Alas that style is, like the boss, now discontinued. I'm not sure that the crown appearance isn't a trick of the light / video blur causing the crown to look round. - Will

I’m confused but I’m new, I thought these were called Stetson hats? Is that not right?
@DavidMorganLLC
@DavidMorganLLC 2 жыл бұрын
Like "Stetson" in America, across the pond in Australia "Akubra" is similarly used as a broader term for a fur felt hat with a good sized brim. Stetson stopped making hats in 1970 and is a design and licensing company now. Akubra still makes their own hats much as they have for over 100 years.
