Thank you, yes later in the day i did try and experiment with a little left foot braking but soon gave up as i needed to just concentrate on looking out the front window 😂😂 but you are right and i think i need to practice more in a safer environment rather than in a rally so i just might book into a rally school if funds allow. I am glad you enjoyed the video and for the advice as need all the tips and advice i can get

A great little video, captures the essence of your event very well. Yoko 032s are tricky in very wet and cold conditions, (hand cutting extra grooves would help in the damp). Also would advise checking/adjusting your camber settings (more negative, front and rear will give you more stability in those conditions) but it also depends on what rubber cones and dampers settings you are using. Final point: don't change too many things in one go, otherwise you won't know what's working. Best of luck

Thank you, not sure about the rules for cutting those tyres but I will defo look into it and maybe seeing what other mini rally driving crews use in the wet. Thank you for the advice with the camber - in the new year I will give it another alignment check and see if I can make any improvements - glad you enjoyed the video and again thanks for the advice we need as much as we can get.

@ Mansell’s crash in the Mondeo was legendary! I’ve loved making the step up and the extra speed, you’ve just gotta go as fast as you are confident to, but you’ve gotta push to learn… I loved driving in the dark at Cadwell but my lights were nowhere near as good as yours… I’m gonna send you an email about Weber jetting by the way, I’d like to pick your brains…

@TheGentlemensMotorRacingTeam
@TheGentlemensMotorRacingTeam Ай бұрын
thank you so much and I am glad you enjoyed the video - genuinely I have no idea what ratio I am running - when I built the rally mini I bought a autocross mini just for the complete engine - so the old owner did not know and ovs I have no idea as I have not pulled it to bits - the engine was originally a metro turbo block and maybe the crown wheel is the same but it now has a straight cut gearbox so it all may be different - I am sure there is a way to find our without pulling it all to bits. anyway so please it has encouraged you to get the mini out of the garage

It's been a while since I drove a Mini at the limit, but from what I recall: Mine was a little tail-happy in the wet from the rear being so light (and the rear geometry not really giving much camber to counter body roll) so it's imperative to enter a corner slow enough that you don't need to back off or feather the throttle while turning. It's an old design that really prefers an old driving style - brake straight, then turn in. Used the power to keep the rear in line and pull me through the curve...and if I needed to slow down after all (usually from either too high an entry speed, or by simply accelerating too quickly through the corner), I found it better to be prepared for the rear to break away the moment my foot eased off the throttle. I actually used to provoke the rear end a bit while I was poised to catch it - and by provoking it a little early, I ensured I had enough grip available to catch it again. (PS: in the dry, trail braking helped get the car to rotate, so it was the go-to technique for FWD cornering - but in the wet, over-rotation was the problem.) Rear tyres pressures were also critical in the wet. Balancing between higher pressures for water clearing and lower pressures to make the tyre soft enough to conform to the road surface better made all the difference. There's not much weight at the back to push the rear tyres into the blacktop, so aquaplaning at the rear always needed to be in the back of my mind. Dunno if any of this will help, as your setup is undoubtedly different to what I was running back in the day...but it's worth a try. Cheer, Kev - and keep it on the island, old son. 🍻😁

@@TheGentlemensMotorRacingTeam BTW, 40:00 was a great catch. You can hear that you stayed steady on the throttle and steered out of it - and it straightened up like a charm. It feels counter-intuitive to get on the throttle when you're getting crooked, but it genuinely works well. Nice one! ☺

Nice run, mate. Looks like you had a fun time - which is what it's all about, after all. 👍 Looks like the driving lights could use a bit of adjustment. If you can get them, I'd recommend using narrow-beam driving lights for the middle two, aimed straight ahead...and really wide-angle flood lights for the sides, angled to each side a touch. I tend to aim them all just a touch high, so I don't lose too much visible distance when I need to brake hard or when approaching a rise. I've always preferred just a little light on the road surface from the centre lights - enough to see potholes and dirt - and aiming most of the light just above the surface gives me better visibility at speed in the distance where the road ends and the trees start. For the slower and/or tighter corners, the floods on the sides cover that well - not much range for those lights, but not much is needed. All that said, it's each to his or her own - actually being the driver will show how effective the lighting is much better than the camera can. Cheers, mate. 🍻

@TheGentlemensMotorRacingTeam well said - its a personal preference thing. I preferred notes that could be up to 4 or 5 corners ahead when it was twisty ... and an explicit 'Repeat' prefacing any repeated call. Although, such lack of chat did allow me to once go all the way up a long steep hill at 8000 in 3rd *without* the navigator questioning why I wasn't in 4th ... that was embarrassing!

@TheGentlemensMotorRacingTeam I refuse to put in writing how much our speed was down to having an excellent co-driver ;) You don't have the grunt of the bigger guys in a mini, but you can certainly make better use of the twisty bits! I remember on a tight stage in Cork, catching up with an escort 1.6 near the end, only for us both to catch up with a 2l escort just before the finish! As the escort struggled around the tight bends where it was a bit loose, the navigator was chatting to me about how much work they made of them ;) The mini was a joy in stuff like that (1330, straight cut everything, gearing shortened by 1.04 drop gear, and a pair of splits), though long smooth straights were depressing!

Hi Kev and Alfie! regarding paint finish for the rally mini, have you ever tried coach enamal? Paintman paints are fantastic! They can be rolled, brushed or sprayed and the paint flows out amazing giving a glass like finish that shines like you wouldn't believe, I've just done the underside of my mini project (I have roller painted over the Raptor coating) and the finish has more gloss that the factory paint ever had! I'll be spraying the body once I've pulled my finger out! Excellent video as always!
