After reading his book as well as other accounts; Garwood was not a POW after a few years. Not a ton of information on him now but he did hold a sks on others in captivity and later on worked with the NVA on vehicles. No other POWs were working on equipment. He mentions not having been trained on the code of conduct and survival techniques were the reasons he didn't live with the other POWs in the first camp. When he did try to leave the country he was going into duty free shops and buying tobacco and other things the locals couldn't get and tried 2 times to pass his note to the whites in the area. A former DIA guy used to have a blog about him and others held in captivity, from memory he didn't get convicted because the health of the POWs who testified against him.
