How do you winterize your banana trees? Such a great garden. The hard work you put in shows. Can’t wait to see what you have planned for next year.

What do you do with your bananas over the winter? Do you just cut them back and put mulch on top? I’m in Naperville and really impressed with your paradise!

I love this...I have one very similar. The inpatients underneath (and shaded) worked well under my Canna's and Elephant ears. But it is a pain to dig them up to save them in fall...as I get older. The other problem is since they are tropical, they do not start to really grow well until June or so (the ground has to warm up enough) and I am too lazy to start them in separate pots.

Well done sir ! Look into a Thailand Giant elephant ear . They get really huge ! I'm pretty sure they're the biggest ones out there in the world.

Looks amazing!! Do the elephant ears survive the winters there?
@kmsch9865 ай бұрын
No, you dig them up before the frost. Cut them back and save the tuber by drying it out. Wrap it up in newspaper and keep in cool dry place over the winter. Replant after last frost in spring. If you only have a few you can plant in a pot and move pot indoors over winter in sunny room. Some people overwinter hardy bananas by cutting down to the ground and piling a ton of leaf mulch on top. It sometimes works.

Beautiful work! The purple decorative bananas are gorgeous. I did not dig out some of the canna tubers last winter (North Chicago/SE Evanston area, by the lake) and the three clumps made it through winter and came back. So did two clumps of purple hearts wandering jew (Setcreassa Pallida). Disclosure: I piled a lot of the fall leaves on top of these plants in the flower bed, and the entire flower bed faces south - full sun exposure. I was a bit shocked to see those come back, and both types of plants are doing better than previous years. Ironically, I lost a few cold-hardy perennials, including a Japanese maple that was in a large container. Last winter was fairly mild though, surely that helped those two tropicals hang on to dear life 'til the hot weather came back. Has anyone else found themselves being able to "overwinter" tropicals outside through Chicago winters?

Great garden! What is the gray cut-leaf foliage plant behind the elephant ears? Does it overwinter? Are you zone 6? Would love to hear mor3 about how you overwinter your tropical plants.

You mentioned poor soil. Isn't the soil in the NW suburbs "rich" since it used to be fertile farmland? What is your soil time?

Do you have a video to show how you" cut and bagged" your banana plant?
@gardenrxpert65736 ай бұрын
That banana is edible. It’s not the typical banana we buy in the grocery store. It makes a good snack by boiling and frying. We make a good salad out the banana heart and the inner part of banana tree is an ingredient for a fresh and raw egg roll.

That’s amazing that you have left those bananas in the ground. Would be great to see a video or two on your winterizing process to save everything as it’s gets cold. Your garden looks really good especially since it’s not even in full sun all day.
