80's, actually. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is happening in 1985, since it is a retelling of the original Super Mario Bros. game from 1985, when Mario and Luigi firstly found the majestic Mushroom Kingdom. Home Computers existed a bit, but cellphones...? Now that's a good question.
