There were 30 deaths due to Spanish Flu at the Woodman Point Quarantine Station from the Boonah tragedy including two Western Australian Aboriginal servicemen, Private Joseph Clatworthy from Esperance and Sapper Albert Henry Sayers from Busselton. Four nurses caring for the 26 servicemen also died. The 'Boonah Tragedy' by Ian Darroch gives an excellent account and the museum in the Isolation Hospital at former quarantine station at Woodman Point honours the memory of these victims. Friends of Woodman Point Recreation Camp hosts monthly tours of the quarantine station. At Perth War Cemetery, two other servicemen who died at Woodman Point from other causes after the Boonah incident also have Commonwealth War Graves headstones.

In fields of valor, where brave hearts tread, Uncle Herbert, with honor led, An Anzac bold, in battle's roar, His sacrifice forevermore. At Fomelles, where courage blooms, Amidst the cannons' thundering booms, He stood for freedom, firm and true, In service to his country's hue. Though shadows fall, and tears may flow, His spirit lingers, a steady glow, In memory's embrace, we hold him near, A hero cherished, forever dear. In tales retold, his legacy lives, Through every echo that memory gives, For Uncle Herbert, we proudly stand, In gratitude, for his valiant stand. Love you Gary ❤🌿🇦🇺

In light of the unconscionable act we learned today and the frightening senseless acts of violence and war, were all these Australians sacrifices worth it?

Well done and highly commendable not only the formal appearance of everyone presenting wreaths but the smartness shown by the regular force "diggers." Note the right turn before moving off. May PO Colebrook rest in peace, duty done.

Good to see the protocol of turning right after presenting their wreaths and then moving off. NEVER turning your back on sacred ground.

RIP RAAF WW2 Airman 437134 Flight Sergeant Hilton Ivor JURY. From information on the NAA, WW2 Roll, and AWM sites, Hilton had been a School Teacher before joining the RAAF on the 7th of November 1942. Following enlistment, he trained as an Observer and Navigator. On the 8th of March, he and his Pilot, 422968 Pilot Officer William Douglas MITCHELL were flying RAAF No. 455 Squadron Beaufighter RD 132 "O" as part of a large, armed reconnaissance off the Norwegian Coast, when their aircraft was shot down. Both men were Killed in Action. They have no known graves, and their names are listed on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey, England, and on Panel 106 in the Australian War Memorial's Commemorative Area. 422968 Pilot Officer William Douglas MITCHELL had been a Medical Student before enlisting, initially as a RAAF Guard, on the 15th of June 1942. He subsequently trained in Australia as an Airman, Pilot, and was a temporary Warrant Officer when commissioned as a Pilot Officer on the 10th of January, 1945. Aircraft he qualified on included Tiger Moth, Oxford, Wirraway, Anson, Beaufort, and Beaufighter. The following paragraphs are from the NAA file for Flight Sergeant JURY, and provide the details of the mission and their loss: "On Thursday 8 March 1945, Flight Sergeant I.H.Jury was briefed to undertake an armed reconnaissance on the Norwegian Coast against shipping in Beaufighter aircraft RD132. They took off from RAF Station, Dallachy at 1410 hours and set course at 1419 hours in a formation consisting of 20 Beaufighters and 2 ASR Warwicks escorted by 14 Mustangs. The Norwegian Coast was reached at Sandoy where aircraft turned North and located a target, 3 merchant vessels and 3 smaller escort vessels at Midt Galen Fjord. A successful attack was made during which one Beaufighter was seen to be on fire and was not seen again. At a point 15 miles out from the Norwegian Coast the leader of the escorting two aircraft, fighters, saw red tracer going down into the sea and two aircraft travelling very fast towards the Norwegian Coast, and two partly inflated dinghies with some wreckage in the sea, but no sign of any crew. As only two aircraft were missing from this operation, and one identified, seen with one engine on fire during the attack, it is presumed that enemy fighters jumped Beaufighter 'O' of 455 Squadron and shot it into the sea. Place of Death: Off Norway. Place of Burial: Lost at Sea. HONOURS AND AWARDS: 1939-45 Star, France & Germany Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45, Australia Service Medal 1939-45".
