Transposition was frequent during this era. Popular songs were also published frequently for people who'd love to sing them, whether the character for which the aria was composed is a female or male, or whether your voice actually is the same as the original singer's. Of course, I'm not going to neglect the fact that Tenor arie of this répertoire were generally less florid and more barytonal, whereas castrato and female voices received much more coloratura passages and hold their voices in a higher range more often. However, I'd say that it's only during the mid to late romantic period that airs became almost unadaptable for other voices and clearly were meant to fit one voice (for french comic operas (even some serious ones) it was less the case, as transpositions were frequently published in the piano/voice reductions).
