The lantern you have right there was made between 1920s-30s. Very nice Lantern, by the way. Here's a little bit of history, R. E. Dietz stopped producing lanterns in Syracuse, New York, in 1956 when they moved all production to Hong Kong. However, the Syracuse factory remained open until 1971, likely handling distribution, administration, or other non-manufacturing functions before closing entirely.

You need the vent for stove pipe and this is just the same as a motor oil burning stoves...You light the fuel and regulate it with the knob make sure the fuel can is vented some if not fuel will stop flowing..For a better version move tank away from stove just like motor oil stove do....I made my own version of this but I use wicks for my cabin...

During the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, I got to spend 8 days without power, and my lanterns came in extra handy. Everything battery-powered was dead or ruined by corrosion, but those oil lamps worked perfectly. Can't ask for better than that! And, yeah, I'll be buying a bunch more of them. The Feuerhand lanterns are the best available today. While pricey, you're getting band new lanterns made in Germany, so you know the quality will be there. Plus, they come in all sorts of pretty colors so you can match your decor!

I have been watching several videos about van camping. Usually they are in quartsite Arizona or other parts of the desert. Occasionaly they are in Florida, California or out east. I was so excited to find a Michigan tour. I live in Wisconsin but got to go to Michigan a couple of summers ago with my daughter. Definitely a trip of a lifetime. Are you from Michigan

2 yrs after you posted but I’d say because it’s an old American made lantern then it’s worth preserving as best you can. If it were mine I’d wash with soap water then bath it in white vinegar for a day and scrub off the rust with wire wool. I’d then wash it well with wd 40 finally I’d rub some oil on it to protect from further rusting. It will then be a hand down to the next generation. If you just leave as is then it’s unlikely to be around for the next generation to enjoy.

It's not the spot where you have a fire that matters, it does a little but a rock fire ring can prevent most of that, what you need to worry about is the embers that float up an get carried off to another spot that's what starts fires more than anything
@jaycimbak77812 жыл бұрын
If no funnel, you can put screwdriver in the fount and pour your fuel slowly against the screwdriver shaft and it will follow the shaft down and into the fount. The ideal situation would be the screwdriver not resting against the fuel port because the fuel may leak onto the outside of the fount.

have two of these, there are no wicks used in them. You do however need the automatic draft control section that goes in the stove pipe for it to work properly. The put out a lot of heat quickly and are great little stoves.

I have the NuWay "Mighty MIte" -it's ancient, I'm guessing it's probably about 75 years old, and still works great. Just uses a small fuel reservoir and tiny fuel orifice. Fuel is pulled in by the draft from the chimney. The only moving part is the needle valve for the fuel. Divied burn chamber, 2nd chamber under the chimney introduces fresh air for a secondary burn, once it's going there's no soot or smoke and barely any smell at all, no smell whatsoever inside the shack. I've used only pump diesel in it, right now using red fuel oil diesel and it loves it. Sure is cheaper than K1 kerosene!

That is a "cold blast" lantern. Therefore it does not recycle the burnt hot air... It takes in fresh air at top and draws it to bottom for burning.

Your lantern doesn't have much collectors value, eBay will tell you that much. Beyond that the glass globe has been replaced. The original would be worth something. I would feel free to paint it whatever way you want. Usually people wipe them down with lacquer thinner lightly sand them and then hit them with engine block paint which can be bought in most colors at an auto parts store. When you lift the lantern you have the wick adjusted way too high you have to be careful with that. Introducing heat too quickly will crack the glass globe. So let it warm up with a very low flame. Beyond that you need to trim your wick. You can trim it like an arrow which resembles the pointed roof of a house, or you can trim it like a snake's tongue which would be the reverse. Both will produce more light than a standard flat wick. That is an older detail lantern made before 1956, because it was built in New York city. It's a very common type of lantern, but very usable. If you plan on burning indoors use liquid paraffin, it will mostly just smell like a candle burning. Outdoors use kerosene or anything along those lines diesel fuel works fine too but has a little more odor. I usually burn mine outside on my porch or take them with me fishing at night. And I like to put citronella oil in it because it might keep bugs away. All in all they are a very safe and good lamp. Smart for anyone to keep a few of these in the garage nice and dry for emergencies. The new ones that you can buy today are not nearly as good as the old ones like yours. Highway departments all over the United States used these for many years, so did the railroad. You see them at auctions and things. Railroad lanterns had larger oil tanks on them to burn longer when left alone, I believe deets called them storm lanterns. The ones used by highway departments were referred to as smudge pots because they replaced the original smudge pot. Many of these have the state and local that they were used in, pressed right into the steel. That always adds some value. For lanterns like that to have stuck around this long, means they were kept in a nice dry place. Make sure you do the same. Basements aren't good for lanterns. They will never throw as much light as a mantle lantern. But deitz lanterns can be used indefinitely. I recommend cleaning it up well, and painting it.
