We've been playing Wasted Lands and Night Shift, and we'll probably play 13 Parsecs once it drops, which all share the same core system. OSR isn't super my thing, and these are OSR-adjacent if not actually OSR, but i love my table and my friends and we tell fun stories with them, so it's all good.

@@DMTalesTTRPG It's a mythic prehistory fantasy game, characters play the adventurers whose exploits become the kernels for our modern myths. OSR-ish mechanics, characters get Divine Touchstones as they progress to inform their myth-originating nature. Setting wise, think more fantasy than swords and sandals, but with some Howard and Lovecraft inspiration. Bronze Age after Mythos-style dark overlords have left/been driven off, humanity is not humans but the humanoid elevated animal species servants left in the wake of the Elder Gods experimentation, the fantasy wilderness is otherworldly technology, remnants and ruins of elder civilization, monsters that are left behind or mutated by areas of Bleed (corrupting otherworldly energy).

Here are my recommendations for indie RPG's. 1. Kogarashi, set in a fantasy world based on Japan (but never named) of Samurai, Ninjas, Martial Artists, Court Nobles (who are really rogues), Wizards, and Priests. It uses only a 1D6 for all rolls, roll equal/under your six attributes of 1-4, spells are skill checks, and armor is a savings throw and effectively your seventh attribute. The game includes humans, dwarves, animals that can turn into humans, and humans with a non-human ancestor that gives them a power. 2. Tiny D6 series. This game uses 1D6 if it is a hard task, 2D6 for a normal task, and 3D6 if it is an easy task. If any dice roll as a 5 or 6 come up (just one needed), you succeed. Your class will give your 4-8 hit points, a special ability only your class has, and a couple of additional abilities you can pick out of the list that genre game allows. There are many Tiny D6 genre specific games to pick. Super heroes, Pirates, Space Explorers, Mecha Pilots (or hero monsters too), Cowboys, Apocalypse wasteland survivors, Spies, even Baywatch lifeguards. Yes, there is a game with that genre setting already made. It is easy, fun even for kids who don't do math yet. 3. Mini-Six Bare Bones. This game is free first of all (so go download it now). It is a continuation of the Star Wars D6 based rules from West End Games. However, this version makes a few changes to a simple system to make it even simpler. Only 4 stats, not 6. Defense "skills" can be pre-calculated, essentially turning them into Armor Class. This is done to speed up play by halving the dice rolls needed, but the old opposed roll system is available if you prefer. Also, the "Wild Die" is toned down so only rolling a 6 on it matters, and Hero Point usage is reigned in, but also given more things it can do (such as buying a plot clue from the GM if you're stuck). The game is meant to cover ALL genres, includes stats for baddies from many backgrounds (giant space battleships to a goblin, ect), but does also include a few knock-off settings with a brief synopsis. Firefly/Serenity, Val Kilmer's Willow, and even a Star Wars type of settings, but are not officially those things.

Haven't heard of Kogarashi. I'll check it out. Have you heard of Wandering Blades? The guy's still developing, and it's more wuxia inside, but I'm curious how you'd say they compare because I'm assuming Kogarashi is done.
@weirdguy564
@weirdguy564 Күн бұрын
@@taejaskudva2543 I found a free quickstart for Wandering Blades and had a brief look. First, Kogarashi is definitely meant to be Japan, and Wandering Blades is definitely meant to be China. Kogarashi is the more rules light game, but also includes some GM material like random mission generator tables and even solo play rules. I would say that Kogarashi is more traditional D&D type of game with wizards, monsters, and magic items. The big changes are the D6 replacing D20, uses a roll under stat system, spells as skill checks instead of slots, and armor is a damage reduction roll. Wandering Blades is more complex game, low fantasy without wizards and magic, and just focuses on types of fighters who use Qi points to use fancy martial arts attacks. There are no magical powers or abilities to jump onto rooftops or run on water. It is more like a fancy strike that can't have the damage reduced. The characters are more believable. Kogarashi also has tables for monsters, missions, loot, magical items, and even a solo play with a table to randomly generate answers to questions (oracle) and dungeon layouts. Wandering Blades Quickstart has much more detailed armor and weapons, more combat options and abilities, but nothing for GM assistance to create a story (aka random tables). However, both games have information on what the culture and government of their setting is, Wandering Blades Quickstart is much more of it with named NPC's, places, and local problems. For me I like Kogarashi more. I like mystic abilities and creatures, and I like Japan more than China as a setting. I also like both games for NOT being a D&D clone, but Kogarashi also fits me better as I prefer rules light games and solo play.

@@DMTalesTTRPG Alas my local game store seems totally uninterested in any RPGs other than Pathfinder. Their space & schedule is almost entirely devoted to card games. My local library has a first come, first serve, hour by hour policy. So, every hour, I'd have to get up and ask if I can have the room for the next hour. If anyone wants it, I'd have to pack up and go. On top of that, my current paying gig is watching dogs, which often means I can't leave the house for more than a couple hours at a time if I've got one (and I usually do). But I'm also not really comfortable with inviting strangers into my home. It's just a conjunction of little things that all work together to make getting a game together a challenge. Still hoping I can figure something out.

Outgunned with the Action Flicks Vol. 1 worlds. It is a tad crunchier than EZD6 with a dice pool mechanic similar to Yahtzee (pairs/trips etc. are successes), if you get 6 of a kind (Spotlight) you as the player get to DM the end of the scene. The NPC/Monster creation is similar to EZD6 with damage and strikes. But players have Grit and if they take too much danger they must make a death roulette roll.

@@DMTalesTTRPG The Dark Eye might not be your cup of tea, due to its complexity. It's a skill-based RPG probably mainly influenced by GURPS and Shadowrun. It's a complicated game, but the detail in character customization puts even Pathfinder to shame (the advantage of a skill based system) and the setting is absolutely gorgeous. Rate it like an 8 in complexity, where I put Pathfinder 2e at around a 7 and D&D 5e at a "6" and Castles & Crusades at a 4 and Fantasy AGE at a 3.5. Yeah, number #1 TTRPG in Germany (or the German version of it is #1 in Germany -- which is called Das Schwarze Auge). I'll have to check out your Fantasy AGE 2e review. Leave it to you to put out the most upbeat, empathetic, and understanding versions of one of these lists. I've had some characters at the table, for sure. One player was frustrating at first, until I really understood his play style. He just wanted to be told what to do. He didn't want to have ambition or plans or to make decisions. You put a carrot in front of him and he would go after that carrot. No need for the stick. Once I figured that out, he became a very handy player to have at the table. No matter what anyone else was getting up to, if I needed the group to move or just DO SOMETHING, I could put a carrot in front of that player and he'd go after it. We had another player who was something of an agent of chaos, and the opposite of a min-maxer. Instead of trying to game the system for the most powerful character, he'd game it for the most broken. In Ars Magica, he ended up having a wizard who, among other things, was addicted to magic, so once he started casting, he had to struggle to stop. He had some kind of wild magic, so it was more likely to pop-off and get weird. And he had some other weird thing that might have been called "chaotic magic" or something. Whatever the case, the way he handled it was to have two decks of cards, one with Technique and one with Form (verb & noun...it's all part of Ars Magica's very robust magic system). So, he'd end up having to try to figure out how to use a random technique to affect a random form, have it do something super strange, then be unable to stop casting random technique/form combo spells until he passed out. I don't know if I explained that right, but I'll just say that it was funny (and sometimes tense), and produced some CRAZY moments, up to and including when he couldn't stop himself and finally cast a spell that ended up essentially ripping himself and one of our big enemies out of reality, so that they both fell through the universe battling each other for all eternity. If I remember right, we'd get occasional glimpses of their ongoing war, but only for brief moments when other powerful magic was happening.

Wow. That’s wild. And thanks for the kind words! I do try to do healthy reflections. It does NOT mean I’ve never had a problem player at the table, though!
