Model 1121 from 1946? It may have grounding issues which would give it wanky FM reception drifting.
@justsumguy2u3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the tip. I haven't had it running yet, but I'll keep that in mind. But much of the problem with non-AFC FM was tube drift and component drift in general. As the set heats up, tube parameters shift...same with resistors as they got hot

Used the "wideband " FM system designed by Edwin Armstrong. Only a few models were made before the FCC allowed RCA and other radio maufacturers to use TV channel 1 to the FM band at 42 to 50 Mhz ,the old channel one. This is why TV's never had a channel 1. That was in 1940. But that frequency allocation was too small for all the stations that wanted to be on the air so by 1945 the FCC changed the band to 88-108 Mhz. If you buy an prewar console with FM you may be disappointed by all of this information but it should work out but making FM presets , I don't know if it can do that. You got a great deal on it my friend. Stromberg Carlson made excellent radios.
@justsumguy2u3 ай бұрын
Zenith hedged their bets in the 40's; they had a few models that had both the prewar AND the postwar FM bands. One thing I always hated about early FM is the lack of AFC. I call these sets "drift-o-matic" because the stations really did like to drift

It is possible you may have an intermitted short when turning the blades due to fine piece of metal or solder splash inbetween the plates. You can confirm this by taking it out of the case and in a dark room turn it on and move the dial and see if a little spark occurs somewhere. I'm sure you did the credit card trick between the plates already to flush any bugger out.
