I love seeing your process and learning so much! Can you use polymer clay to create the scales for the mold since it doesn't dry unless it's been oven-baked, similar to the oil-based clay?

Really quick question, if you don't mind me asking,what kind of clay are you sculpting with?

For my large sculpts I used a smooth porcelaneous stoneware water based clay by Plainsman called P700. For the smaller more recent sculpts I used just a basic sulphur free oil based clay.

I can't remember, but you can buy 40lbs bags of plaster from concrete supply stores. I don't bother buying anything smaller, the cost difference isn't worth it.

how do you get your clay not to crack?

I work really fast, I don't give the clay any time to dry to shrink and possibly crack. Something that may help if you are experiencing cracks wth pottery clay: put damp sponges beside the edges on your sculpt then cover it all with plastic.

What kind of airbrush did you used? What brand? Did you sealed the silicone paint to give it a gloss at the end with a clear airbrush paint?

Hello Adventure, I use large auto detailing gravity fed airbursh guns. I also use a small iWata gravity fed gun for the detail work. Yes, I go over all my tails with a clear coat of PsychoPaint to seal the colours and prevent them from rubbing off.

What paint did you use? I can’t find anything that works.

Platinum silicone such as Smooth-On's Dragonskin can only be painted with PsychoPaint by Smooth-On. For this repaint I used diluted Shin-Etsu because it was an old tail and new PsychoPaint may not have adhered properly.
