Phil was so lovely in the early days. Sad and beautiful storyline, Mark and Jill.

So sad mark died around 10 years after Gill. Shame he and Ruth didn't last. And sweet he told Michelle make sure he is brought home when he passed but Michelle wasn't there when he died, only Pauline and Martin were. Martin's the only Fowler left. Arthur, Mark, Pauline gone, even Martin's daughter Rebecca

Always knew Mark was married to Gill but never saw episodes, only when he was married to Ruth. Who he should have been with. Not Lisa who didn't deserve him, Mark deserved a better woman. Like how he and Michelle were really close

Jill shouldn’t have asked Mark to tell people she died from AIDS. People back then would’ve immediately assumed Mark had AIDS too.

Michelle can never put herself in other people's shoes, especially blokes. So Michelle uses her female charms on Arthur and then resents blokes for being honest about their intentions.

I can see why Mark went off and died on his own now - as he did not want to put his family through any suffering. He was always a very private man and thiinking of others.

Maybe i've been in too many "lockdowns" over the pandemic.....but do people like at 3:55 (Arthur and Phil) really talk that close together?? They could almost kiss they were so close! I hope they were using breath mints. I think this was also common in filming in this era with the much narrower 4:3 aspect ratio. Now they have widescreen the actors can at least be a bit further apart.

Is it wrong?! So jealous of Jill, when she gets to kiss Mark, be near him, so sad she died! Love her aura, she was better matched to Mark then Diane was, and they were the only two people who understood each others tough times! Love the scene in the restaurant where they are all at the table, she orders the ice cream, and they all eat the same, so not to leave her feeling isolated x moving scenes for sure x

Corrie had the storyline with Rita and Ted around this time. Both soaps had touching scenes but Easties broke new ground with Gill’s story, harrowing yet incredibly moving and sensitively scripted and acted. 😢 💔 👏

EastEnders has often seemed more realistic and relevant to me. Corrie is too glorified and people seem to recover too quickly in it.

Susannah Dawson (Jill) was so moved by this whole storyline that she made a video about her time on EastEnders which was raised to raise HIV awareness. As a kid who saw said video in the 90s, she did a fine job.

EastEnders was still very watchable back then; I remember Mark and Gill in her flat in Tulse Hill, trying to cope with the effects of her illness. Incredibly depressing, but so well written and acted you'd sooner have it than the rubbish that the programme has become nowadays.

Back then Phil was almost as nice as pie. What made him such a miserable bully-like old man?
@hussainmartins5985
@hussainmartins5985 2 жыл бұрын
Him accidentally burning someone alive in the car lot fire of '94, his alcoholism developing as a result of the car lot fire, his relapse in '96, Grant sleeping with Kathy and ruining his chances of getting back with Ben, Kathy and Ben leaving for south Africa, Lisa's miscarriage, his fallout with Peggy in '99, and Ricky calling Phil out for his bullcrap just before leaving in '00. All that happened within the space of 6 years. Ricky's leaving was the final straw. After that, he just snapped. To be fair, Phil was only a bully to people who had it coming or who crossed him first, but yh he definitely became colder by April 2000.

@@passionfruit7276 indeed... Aiden I think was Sean Maguire's name on EastEnders. Had an Irish accent. Plus yes Grange Hill and EastEnders often have things in common. And The Bill of course. Todd Carty did the full swing. Tucker in GH, Mark in EE, and evil PC Kent in the Bill.
