Nope. Disagree about registration office interaction. While the system doesn’t grant Koreans (despite how many generations they’ve been in Japan) citizenship and therefore they must register at 16 yo; it is the clerk who gets to decide how will I treat this Korean today? It’s a crap shot. When Solomon‘s father registered; it was a normal interaction. When Solomon registers they’re told to wait (no reason given). The fact that they have a benched area away from the line, literally builds the discriminatory area right in the systematic building. But it’s up to each clerk if they’re going to use that power that day, which interaction?

This was such a good review thank you! I’ve been wanting to read this book bc I watch the author’s vids on KZbin and thought it would prob be good. At first when you were talking about what happens I was like mb this is too intense for me, as I tend to use books more as happy escapism, but watching the rest of your video it sounds really good and I’m thinking it might be worth the emotional upheaval.
@coffeebookshelves5919 Жыл бұрын
I treat books the same way, positivity and escapism are key motivators for me. There are a lot of dark themes in this book but the heroine is so talented and so hellbent on achieving her goals that her (seemingly) hopeless situation actually becomes a powerful weapon for her. I really think the light in this book is worth the pain.

I first read this book around 2019. At that point, I'd not read in years and just wanted something to get me back into the habit. So, i picked this book up from my local library becaude the cover looked nice and the synopsis seemed intriguing. When i started reading it, I literally never wanted to put it down. The writing was so funny, sad, and real. I don't think I've ever read anything that felt like each charcater was a fully developed person. I really should read it again

Great review. I’m a mood reader & I am looking through my TBR pile trying to decide what to read next. I just finished The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese. I’m still processing it. Then I read The House of Eve by Sadeqa Jonson which was a pallet cleaner after reading The Covenant of Water. I probably need something lighter for now but I will get to Pachinko soon!

I want to thank you for creating this video and expressing your thoughts on the disparity of black authors in publishing. I am a Haitian American author who started writing at 12. I finally published my first Dark Horror fantasy fiction novel in 2020, that depicted a strong black Caribbean woman as the protagonist. The book is centered around a group of diverse characters from different walks of life. I wanted to write horror that finally showcased black people, Asian, Hispanic, American, etc…… I am now marketing in every platform you can think of and have had great support but to be honest there is still discrimination going on especially on Twitter and Instagram when it comes to black authors who write other genres that don’t depict slavery or racial tension. As a community it’s not all all about supporting Black Lives Matter. We all should be treated equally . It’s all about the story we are telling. Main stream media only picks what they think will be accepted. It’s truly sad and I pray that things get better. I as a an author will continue to spread the word about black authors needing to be more recognized and supported. God bless you and thank you again for this great video
@coffeebookshelves59193 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing your experiences. The treatment is very unequal from both audiences used to seeing only certain types of books from Black authors and from publishers. Good luck with your dark horror fantasy! What a great addition to the canon.

@@coffeebookshelves5919 you’re very welcome. We can only hope that a change comes. We all should be treated equally. Color should never be defined by the craft of writing. Thank you so much for the well wishes. Means a lot . God bless
