It takes extra effort, and may look a bit silly, but, it adds so much perspective that it’s invaluable to this kind of video 🥰 Thanks for walking those extra footsteps for us all 🥰

Hey Alistair, I really enjoyed this - the combination of adventure, personal challenge of a fresh kind, and literary reference. The filming is, of course, beautiful. But Oh My God, I felt your pain and discomfort at playing rudimentary violin to earn a crust or two. You had to pick the hardest instrument to learn! You’d have done far better to pick up a ukelele (tho Laurie Lee would’ve disowned you). You made me laugh and cringe, and swell with admiration in equal measure. Adventure comes in many forms. But isn’t it really about doing something that takes you out of your comfort zone? You certainly did that! And I hope you’re getting better at the violin! All the best and I look forward to the next adventure x

hey! the link to the form for questions seems broken
I liked the fact that you pointed out that most bothies depend on donations. Unfortunately, far too many people who use bothies do not make any donation at all. If everyone who used a bothy donated as little as £5 per night it would allow for maintenance costs and perhaps even more bothies being available.

I grew up in the west of Scotland, where my bedroom window perfectly framed Ben Lomond. That view was a calling, one that I wouldn't answer until well into my 20s. Not so much the Far Cuillin calling as all those other mountains that became companions for many decades. I've stayed in a few of those wee howfs too since I started hillwalking in the late 80s. I even spent a cold spring night in the infamous Culra, having walked across in two days from Glen Nevis. It was replete with its asbestos and we were sadly ignorant of the fact. I didn't take the saw to the walls so should be fine. On another occasion I pitched my tent inner inside Corrour to escape the midges that engulfed it on a pee trip. Some time later me and a mate staggered into a remote one in Knoydart after barely surviving flooding conditions in Glen Carnach; it took eleven hours to travel about the same in kilometres from a Munro high camp. Cheers, and thanks for the reminder to indulge in 'micro-adventures' every now and then. Tasmania, December 2024.

Intrresting but don't forget that: In 1984, the UK's overall food sufficiency was 78%. In 2021, it was 60%. Today, the nation is only 18% self-sufficient in fruit, 55% in vegetables and 71% in potatoes
@sarahlund7363Ай бұрын
Interested to know what is being done with all the land then? What is the actual land use dedicated to in the UK exactly? 🤔

Thanks @justinvideoman, it'd be good to see overall land use statistics as well, both in England and Scotland. Even better in a map! :-D I will have a dig around at some point on Defra and see if I can find it. Cheers

Environmental awareness and appreciation of nature should be built into the school curriculum so that today's youngsters grow up as better stewards of the natural world than their forebears. Jamie O tried to improve school dinners, so there's a similar challenge for you Al - find a way to enhance nature awareness in 5-18 education! More achievable in the short term, a book and/or series of YT vids or social media posts to show folks how they can reduce environmental impact in their daily lives. 'Local' is great but it's message only gets through to folks who buy the book, already likely to be onboard. Merry Christmas!

As a 66 year old invisible female pensioner who also missed the northern light show I have to say I despair too. But your videos and enthusiasm and the fact you do care does cheer me up a little. I loved your book Local - how about a book on a deed a day or a week an ordinary person could do to save our wonderful planet - or something similar.....written with your good humour self deprecation and panache!

Private land ownership and it's use in Scotland doesn't help. Much of it is owned by absentee landlords and/or is mainly used by foreigners paying lots of money to come and 'hunt' (bah ha!) and fly off back home again. What do we do? Not sure tbh but I don't think half the nation even knows about or understand the scale of the problem and why it matters

Hi Alastair, I'm interested to know how you decide who to believe when it comes to climate change. There are convincing cases from many different sources and I find myself confused and sceptical. Don't you?
@motoani941Ай бұрын
If climate change turns out to be irrelevant, wouldn't it still be nice to have reduced emissions and live locally?
@ripvanwinkle3509Ай бұрын
@motoani941 By 'live locally' do you mean extremely restricted movement?

What always strikes me is that even IF it's all a hoax / nonsense / hype / panic etc etc., then all the changes I'm currently anxious for society to make would still mean that the world was cleaner, quieter, wilder, simpler... there's no downsides really!

Organic agriculture have lower yield, so it needs more land to grow the same amount of food. More agriculture land means less natural land, less forest,...
@al_humphreysАй бұрын
Yes, organic is better for river pollution and the emissions involved in producing pesticides etc., but it's bad in terms of calories or protein produced per square metre.

We talk, in climate breakdown / climate emergency circles, about "tipping points": things that can / will occur which will accelerate the changes that are making our planet uninhabitable. And the only way we're going to avoid wiping ourselves off the face of the planet is by reaching a different tipping point: one where a majority of all peoples come together to change the way we live and the priorities we place on human endeavours to ensure our survival. We've still got a long road to travel to reach that tipping point, and an even longer road to travel to prevent mass extinction.
