Awesome video, even if it's better played at 1.5x playback speed. 🤭Still, pausing and rewinding VHS wasn't anywhere near as easy, or accurate as it is on KZbin. I seem to recall that getting the sound out of my VHS player, onto an audio cassette that I could (in theory) play back on the data-cassette recorder attached to my Spectrum would have been extremely difficult too. Connecting the VHS player into the home Hi-Fi stack, rather than just into the telly, so that we could hear the amazing stereo sound recorded on professional VHS tapes took me a long time to figure out, and my Dad quickly undid it all because he couldn't hear tapes without turning the Hi-Fi on. My biggest issue with his code, is with the final program. Why on earth was he using that complicated POINT instruction to detect the walls, when they are clearly Green on something, (in the attribute plane) while the man and the tea lady are black on white. Surely he could have used a simple ATTR(l,c) function to check the attribute of the block they are moving into. This would use the same co-ordinate system, and thus be both easier to read, (self-documenting) and should be faster for the Spectrum to execute. (it's essentially just a PEEK of the attribute array in memory, base+ L ⨉ 32 + C. He could also use SCREEN$(l,c), but that's pretty slow for the Spectrum to execute, and he'd have to use something other than spaces for either the halls, or the walls. I would probably have done collision detection prior to implementing movement, so I don't have to store where the man / tea lady was as well as where they will be, and I would certainly have written code to be more lenient on the user in regard to case, and number of characters in the earlier programs. Reduce it to one character, and if that one characters value is below 91 (one more than upper-case "Z") then use the CHR$ of that CODE plus 32. 114 LET a$=a$(1 TO 1) 115 IF CODE(a$)<91 THEN LET a$=CHR$(CODE(a$)+32) With those two lines, not only would "m" or "f" be valid, but "M", or "F", or "male", or "female", or "Male", or "Female", or "MaLe", or "FeMaLe", or "Mammoth", or "Fly", or anything else, so long as the first letter was either M or F in any case. Clipping extra characters is particularly useful on his rubber keyboard Spectrum because, as he points out, there isn't a unique "DELETE" key as there was on everything after the Plus models, and not every user knew how to delete what they had accidentally typed. And it's easy on most keyboards to roll your finger onto a second key. In tutorial terms, I would probably have introduced INKEY$ in the Hang-Man game, because it would automatically ensure that no more than one letter was presented by the user at a time. Again, I would add or subtract 32 from it to discount the shift key, or state, and you can look at a standard ASCII chart to see why that works. You can also test for letters below "A" or above "Z" (ie non-alphabetic letters … Like numbers or punctuation) and discard them, so you don't get hung from mistypes, and you could even keep a string with all the previous guesses, and compare against those before accepting a guess too. That way, the Sinclair ROMs poor software "debounce" code won't get you hung either. Most importantly, I would highly recommend this video to any Americans who have picked up a second hand Spectrum and are completely confused because it isn't an Apple ][ or a Commadore 64. 🤭Or, even if you are just young, and want to play with an emulator. But, do remember that the newer models had an EDIT key, and a DELETE key, as well as a purpose built EXTENDED MODE key, BREAK key, and dedicated cursor keys. So there isn't quite so much finger jujitsu involved in typing your programs and moving around the editor. If your emulator doesn't map those extra keys to something on a PC keyboard, I'd suggest finding a better emulator, because just those few do make the whole process a heck of a lot easier. If you're really struggling, any of the 128K versions had a fully typed editor for programs … But it was SO SLOOOooow, I found it quite painful to use. I would actually write 128K basic code in the 48K compatibility mode, save it to tape, reload it in the 128K editor, add the extended commands for PLAY or to access the RAM disk only after the rest of the functionality had been implemented … BUT! If you are spending an inordinate amount of time trying to find the right combination to get every key word, then your time calculations could well be completely reversed. There are also 3rd party ROM images, which can replace the Sinclair ROM (which Amstrad kindly donated to the public domain) with one with bug fixes, and a full-type line input mode. (and they do it better than the 128K editor) But for physical hardware, you'd need a blank PROM and a PROM blower, at least. Ideally, you should use a nice, safe chip remover to lever the original ROM out, and insert your "upgrade." (quoted, because some programs may rely on the "bugs" being present)

This was the best decade, I’ve so many great memories. I got married in 1988 and we’re still going strong 36 years later. I’d go back and do it all again in a heartbeat, they were the best of times and we were truly free….no big brother watching our every move and listening to our conversations. 2024 and the world has fell on its head!

Great clip although Duran Duran sounds like a stereo broadcast but nicam wasn't being broadcast in 1982 so how can this be? Has the home video had a touch of remastering perhaps? Dexys later on sounds proper mono but I've not checked much more. Maybe I'm missing something but had to mention it :)

Culture club in 1982: "Do you really want to hurt me?" A huge amount of people Britain: "Yes" It was that polarised back then and the gender bending coming out artists really had a mountain to climb and a mountain of abuse to face. The thing is, behind the scenes, bands like the Culture Club were unspoken guilty pleasures of music enjoyment. You just feared to tell your mates you quite liked the music. Queer bashing was still rampant, just as racism was.
