Great video, just bought a HELO2 and past my nitrox in the Maldives believe it or not, and went through the manual and as you say quite hard to follow, and needed a rough guide to setting up the mixed gas for nitrox, and am diving the Thistlegorm in the end of FEB, and watched your video's Great vids and SAFE DIVING Kev all the best.

I dived out of Yanbu for a year. Simply stunning diving those offshore reefs.

Interesting really! What gases did you carry? What was the intended depth? Was it a low flow or no flow at all cave? Also what was the water temperature?
@kjp543

This was a no-flow cave system,. dived on Air, with deco boittles and backup gasses left in the deco area. This paparticular session was aimed at putting in a gold-line down to 25m. (subsequent trips went down to 57m). Water temp 25 degrees.

I have dived a few times on the islands over the years and loved it. Going through some of the tight tunnels and submerged caves was probably the best.

Hi Kevin! I skipped thru your presentation a bit. I was interested in what you mentioned about "the south" of the Red Sea; however, I noticed that you did not mention Jazan or the Farasan Islands. I'm in the process of planning my first trip to KSA in the upcoming years and during my visit, I would definitely want to dive for at least 4 days during my trip. I'm interested in particularly large marine life such as sharks, mantas, dugongs, whale sharks, etc as I'm an underwater photographer. From the blogs and vlogs I've seen, it seems as though Farasan Islands would be the best experience for diving "untouched reef systems". Have you dived there at all? Do you have any recommendations for that area? Are there any particular "dive seasons" in KSA? Like maybe its colder in January, but it brings large pelagics. Thank you again for any information you can provide. John

John, I dived Farasan Banks (we were advised not to go as far south as the Islands due to tensions with Yemen). That said the Farasan Banks were superb. I have anorther video on my channel of that trip. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3SbZn6apMunhtE I have now been back in the uk for nearly three years so not up on the current situation in Saudi. However I would recommend speaking to BevTec diving (Dave Bevan and Kat Trencher) who run a dive ceter and trips in the Saudi Red Sea. How do they know, that there is clean air? There could be unbreathable gas, accumulated there for many years.

I was there in 1994. Stationed at Al-Kharj. When I was there you could walk that dive. The lake was so far down, that we followed that main line all the way to the end walking. It was a big joke among the GI’s. “There is this underground lake you have to go see. Just follow the string” and when you get there, which took forever, someone had spray painted “haha” on the wall. Looking back it was stupid for us to go, middle of nowhere, no one knew where the 4 of us were. I remember there was one section that was just a crevasse and you had to put your back against one wall and your feet on the other wall and shimmy across. I’m surprised to see the lake that high.

I am tired of the word "rarely dived sites" Diving doesn't hurt reefs; fishing does. With the growth of diving in Saudi the key is to ban spear fishing and fishing in general. Otherwise, reefs will be depleted in no time at all.

It requires a squeeze through some narrow passages.. Suggest best way to dive it would be with Chris from @AlphaDivers.. not least to ensure you find your way back out.
