Machining in place, makes sense when the part is already on a big electric motor, bring the lathe to it.

Yes exactly, the drive sheave can be done at the job site but the deflector sheaves, because they’re small, and no way to drive them to machine them, we do them in the shop and adjust the bearings

I’ve never heard of cast iron rod! I used nickel stick rod to repair a broken gearbox housing and it machined very nicely. I wish I were a younger man, so much to learn for someone like you.

Amazing to see the ingenuity of a skilled craftsman, thank you for posting this. How is the elevator motor controlled when you are recutting a sheave?
@InternationalRevereMachiningАй бұрын
Thank you for the comment We turn on the machine and use its motor. It has a controller which allows us to adjust the speed.

Why install a mixing motor on a line boring machine? What line boring machine are you referring to?
@InternationalRevereMachiningАй бұрын
It is our Power Feed design - our Power Feed is used to move and rotate the boring bar. We show the capability to adapt different kinds of motors to rotate the boring bar, motors with different power and speed, depending on the client's needs. We design and manufacture our Line Boring machines in Chicago. Thank you for the question. You can see more here: kzbin.info/aero/PLgXeb3TEoKSrxLnx39PtTtfW_tXDIUTnz

You gotta drive the boring bare, mine uses a 1/2" drill and a small cylinder and needle valve to control feed

Balls of steel standing right next to that amount of energy! Especially with bearings! That's two gernades sitting in front of you. They are brittle and very very lethal under the pressure you are applying. I hope to see safer environments. Cool repair, but that was risky!
@InternationalRevereMachining2 ай бұрын
Yes, you are correct about the brittle bearings and the pressure, but you don't have all the information. Inside between the 2 cones we got a sleeve which actually eliminates any pressure on the cones over the cups. So there is no danger. This sleeve is holding the clearance for adjustment of the bearings. No pressure is applied between the cones and cups. Thank you. Safety is very important to us and we use these machines with great caution. 75 tones of pressure is very dangerous if you don't know what you are doing....

Nothing like making it way harder than it needs to be....
@InternationalRevereMachining3 ай бұрын
Hi, this is double row self-aligning roller bearing. In order to release the bearing from the taper, you have to pressurize the inner ring of the bearing to release the tension over the tapered sleeve. If you use a regular puller, it will grab the outer ring and you are going to create more pressure over the inner ring, making it harder to pull the bearing out, and you can destroy the bearing. This is the best and the right way to do this particular job. Thank you for your interest in our work.

Many thanks for sharing this. I follow a lot of machining content here but have never seen anything like this. Is this kind of "in-place" work common when dealing with elevator machinery? (Also, neat to see something from Chicago. I'm up in Rogers Park.)
@InternationalRevereMachining3 ай бұрын
Thank you! This kind of work is required in specific circumstances - when it's hard to remove the elevator sheave, for example, to be worked on in the machine shop. Most of the sheaves are machined in a machine shop, where one has all the tools and space to complete the job. Sometimes a job on the job site is more economically and physically feasible. In order to machine on the job site, we usually create a unique tool for the specific job, depending on how much space there is around the machine, how worn out the shaft/bearing seat is, etc. It is always case to case evaluation. And for us it is always an honor to have the opportunity to work on these iconic sites in our beautiful city.
