I don't understand why it is that the team could not radio for a rations air drop. After all, they were in comm with Blechley Park.

My great uncle Sapper James Stephen was one of the men who was on the first failed mission. He survived the glider crash but as the documentary says he was caught and executed

Early to mid 80's I was at Rjukan on my Msi's course and they got one of the Norwegians involved in the raid to come in one evening and give a talk on what happened. I cannot remember the Mans name but he as a very interesting person with a first hand account of how it was carried out. I thanked him that night for the lecture and had nothing but admiration for the mens courage and guile in getting their job done.

Lol they think the movie is bad wait until they hear about what Battlefield did. They completely eraser the Commandos from their own mission and had some random mom and daughter take the facility down.

Wow. When was this tv series made? I have seen pretty much everything he has done, and I don't recall ever seeing this one. Then again, I live in Canada so we don't get BBC and other channels from the UK unless we had satellite back in the day, and that was very rare.

This was the first TV series he ever did, from 1994/5. Not listed on imdb for some reason though.

I’ve done a fair bit of long distance hiking and our packs usually came in at about 15 kilos.. believe me, you really know you’ve carried it at the end of the day. So, double that, travelling a much greater distance, in those conditions.. those men were tough! 😳

How do you know this is a true story? Why no critical appraisal? How did the Norwegian commandoes survive on the plateau in those conditions for as long as they did. This programme indicates it is not possible. Why would the germans leave the rail tunnel into the plant unguarded? Why such limited damage to the heavy water plant. Why no fire fight or casualties on either side? Did the Norwegians and germans collaborate to stage a limited damage mock sabotage raid? Did the germans do this to limit damage and loss of production? Did the Norwegians do this to forestall an Allied bombing raid with subsequent loss of civilian lives? The Norwegians first duty was to Norway's best interest.

It seems to me Ray that what you saying is that it wasn't possible for the commandoes to survive in the way they claimed? I have visited both the plateau in summer and the hydro power station. Survival on the plateau in summer would be difficult and entry to the plant impossible. I believe the Norwegians cooperated with the Germans to fake the sabotage of the heavy water machinery in order to forestall an Allied bombing raid, that did subsequently occur twice with Norwegian civilian casualties. The 'fortuitous' entry to the plant via the unguarded tunnel, combined with no loss of life of either the commandoes or German guards and the minimal damage done. I think it is time the Norwegians come clean on this one.

How could anyone go to all the trouble to upload almost all the videos in this absolutely amazing story ... and deliberately hide the climax and most exciting one of all, (Episode 14) ? It takes a certain kind of sadist to waste peoples time like this and get some unfathomable kick out of spoiling other's enjoyment.

Although all those that participated directly in Operation Grouse survived the war, it should be noted that Leif Tronstad died late in the war on March 11, 1945.

Does anybody remember the episode where Ray made a raft? from a circle of sticks, forming a doughnut shape which he then lashed a tarpaulin over it, put his possessions into a waterproof bag, inverted the lot and paddled his way across a lake. I would love to see this again, it was one of his earliest films on the tv.

Does anyone have the actual recipe of Mears' bannock? I mean literally the recipe he uses in this video, i'd be curious to give it a shot myself, but i'd like to have all the ingredients and exact amounts down before i attempt to make it myself. Thanks to anyone who'll answer to this.

In his 'wilderness chef' book the ingredients are as follows : Makes 1 2 cups (250g) plain or self raising flour 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp salt 2 tbsp butter or veg oil plus extra for greasing About 2/3 cup (175ml) cold water For a sweet version add 1 cup (125g)milk powder and replace the salt for sugar and add half a cup (75g) of dried fruit Hope that helps!
