Really interesting video! I’m curious, how do those push buttons interact with TrainController on the laptop?

I choose to watch KZbin via the desktop site, rather than the App. It's a matter of personal choice, and to some degree, a principal. I therefore accept that some features, available with the app, will not be available to me. That's fine and I have no issue with that. However, I do take issue with KZbin's latest attempt to force viewers to use the app, where they reduce the quality of playback, several times during each video, despite the fact that I have chosen the 720p quality, via the settings. Apart from it being irritating to have to keep reselecting my chosen quality, it also is incredibly disrespectful to the content creators who invest, a not insignificant amount of money, in good quality tech to produce better quality videos for their viewers. McKinley Railway have clearly invested a lot of money to produce a more professional experience for their viewers, only for KZbin to decide that doesn't matter, and reduce playback to 360p for those 'rebellious' so and so's who refuse to be badgered into using the app, all the time. I might just be rebellious enough to cancel my KZbin Music subscription too!

we have a load of tortoises, the jig would be really useful to have one of those jigs, I could print myself, would you share the stl file for that purpose?

I do like the idea of automating the Mainline, thus leaving operators to focus on control of the Branch Lines, Marshaling Yard, etc. Your videos are very instructive, too. Thank you!

Very interesting. How does the database handle a freight car that stops directly over the RFID reader and changes directions? It seems the database will think the freight car is still in the siding.
@ericjonboone

One thought I had was using 3 rfid readers per turnout; one at each clearance point and one at the switch points. The freight car location in the database would only change after the freight car crosses two readers. If a car stops and changes directions right on top of the second reader, the location would only be wrong for a very short time as the freight car only must travel the length of the turnout before the location is updated.

I make my own rust powder from 0000 steel wool soaked in vinegar for a couple of weeks. Every batch I make comes out a different shade of rust from deep red to bright orange. I also use women's eye shadow makeup I get for $1.00 at the dollar store. It sticks better than any weathering powder you could ever hope to use. And it comes in every color under the sun. I got one with brown earth tones and some orange for light rust. I also use real bituminous coal for my locomotive tenders and coal loads. I've got this huge chunk of coal I went at with a hammer and smashed it into HO scale bits. The larger bits I use for my O scale Lionel. Last step is Dull Coat sprayed out of one of my airbrushes. Cheers from eastern TN

I believe the Viessman Commander + point and block decoders can do this and more straight out of the box. Pity Version two (with wireless phone/ tablet control) has been delayed so long. The block decoders are connected to the 'red' power for a blocked section and detect anything drawing power in that block. Despite reading the manual, I'm not sure on any details. Anyone got experience in Viessman?

Excellent. Thank you for sharing. Might I enquire about weathering the yellow warning panels at each end of a diesel locomotive? Yellow is a colour that tends to fade naturally over time although the effect can be quite subtle.

I wonder if there have been any like problems with DCC Concepts Cobalt point motors or whether they have an alternative security arrangement?

Great video! I have used Kadee couplings for a few years now. The length proved to be a problem at first but over came it by using the Kadee 20 and cut to suit. The auto uncoupler for reliability I use drone motors, they are the same diameter but a little longer.

Q: have experimented with RFID here, the high frequency ones I think you are using, works fine on some freight stock if kept away from metal ballast weights. have you had luck using them on locomotives or are you only tagging wagons?
