Haendel is great, and what fun! i'm sorry, but the music of today just does not cut it, for me....doesn't come close; most springs from a very dark place and can enter one's heart unknowingly.

satanic evil rules the world (dec 2024) but ultimately God reigns supreme, however He may be conceived, up there, or in our hearts, or both...And of course, Haendel is magnifecent...

Believe it or not, I was introduced to this part of the Israel in Egypt oratorio by a video that featured a cylinder recording from 1888. The Oratorio was sung at the Crystal Palace by a choir of 4,000. What I could hear through the scratches and mists of time was so beautiful, I just had to listen to a current audio or video!

I had the same experience. In order to decipher the 1888 recording and make sense of it, I had to listen to a modern recording and that is how I came to know this wonderful music. Another Handel oratorio with a wonderful final chorus is "Solomon" : "Praise the Lord with Harp and Tongue". The 1888 cylinder recording is the oldest ever recording of a choir.

@@MrBulky992 Simply amazing, isn't it? Both Handel's work and the age of the recording.

Thank you for this wonderful performance (and upload) of this unjustifiably underperformed work - in the evocative Neubaukirche suitably bedecked with seasonal finery. Best wishes to the musicians and all concerned in the exquisite and historic city of Würzburg.
