I am a 747-400/-8i Captain and my father was a 747-200 Captain, which I also flew as a first officer. My father’s best friend used to be the senior training captain on 747-200 back in the 80s, early 90s. He insisted on trying out the hatch and the reels for himself, which brought up some advice, which to this day I pass on to anyone on the cockpit jump seat. Firstly, the reels will only start dampening what feels like a free fall on the last few meters. So the initial natural reaction could be: “S***! This isn’t working - I’ll better let go of the reel in order to brace myself!” Don’t! Secondly, those reel metal tapes have razor sharp edges. So if you can, you should really try getting them out of the way for the next guy.

@Boeing747-8i great anecdote. Yes we were always taught not to break your fall, but I wasn't aware that the dampening only really took place in the last few meters! Spooky.

This is internet at its best. When I read your reply on YT, the KLM 747-300 cockpit reels vid was being recommended. In this, there is Lufti-footage of the 747-200 and the exact event I wrote about. My father’s friend is the second from left on the ground. Unfortunately, he died a few years back, but I can show it to my father.Thank you so much.

I was trained on the 747 at Boeing in late 1975/Spring of 76. There were no Appendix H simulators in those days, requiring some of the training and final check ride to be flown on an actual aircraft. Back on the ground at Boeing Field, the Check Airman and the resident FAA DPE congratulated me on the successful completion of my ride, but informed me that I had to jump out of the hatch in order to receive the Type Rating. Although we were trained on those devices, no one had told me about this crazy twist. Having been terrified of heights all my life, I almost had a heart attack! When they realized the "prank" may have gone too far, they all laughed and told me this was a joke they would often pull on young and gullible idiots like me, and handed me the certificate! 😏

It's a bit surprising they have filmed this without any safety measures in the ground. Panic at the hatch and slide down without holding the handle well enough? That's quite a high drop on the asphalt.
@mar_man8132 жыл бұрын
That's what I was thinking. For a training/video, should have large pads at the bottom. If their fingers slip or they let go by accident, that's a 50 ft fall.

I have gotten a comment on this video which does not show up here --- and when I click on it in my notifications, it simply disappears as though into thin air. That phantom comment reads as follows: "This was the first time they had known of, heard of, or experienced such an issue. This video on volcanic ash training is now included as a result of what this flight and crew experienced in...", and it ends right there.

30:58: Pilots not listening, eh? Maybe ash dynamics should be a mandatory part of an airline captain's flight training, and then hold pilots responsible for being careless with ash just as much as holding them responsible for anything else that can disrupt airplanes and kill passengers..
