FACT: Bovines eat grass. FACT: Muscle meat is developed by running around, not being confined to a concrete floored barn. Anything else is ridiculous. Leave nature alone.

I believe that farmland and housing should not be allowed to be a return on investment. The Dutch have been obliged to cull huge numbers of cows because they dont have enough land to spread slurry. From this comes the nitrogen derogation EU wide, a further inflation of land prices. At least this farming family is adding value to production, ie yoghurt and milk sales. Farming is about food and most pharmers are fed from supermarkets inc my own country, Rep of Ireland. I regard modern pharming a disaster re ecology, environment and economics. All over the 1st world we have the oldest, smallest and most unsettled nations of farmers. Young people dont want to know. A retail cost of production for a commodity reward is NOT a business. Farmers, with no added value are caught between the two. Take out EI monies and off farm job income and how many will remain.

The more intensive pharming becomes the more it goes inside. Pig and poultry have gone inside and disappeared. Now cattle farming going the same way. How long do cows last inside on hard surfaces. I cannot believe there is no compaction issues. To see a machine cutting grass that is not even lawnmower grass, probably no diversity looks very unnatural. The only metric of approval today is production levels. What about all the extra slurry in a wet year. Is there any wildlife on that farm.
@grasstechnology2 ай бұрын
The machine does less damage on the land than cows do. The slurry is spread onto the fields to help grow more grass.

It's the Netherlands, land is at a very high premium, and the fragmented nature of his land encourages this kind of system. Just because a farming system has always been a particular way doesn't mean it can't change.

The lbs per square inch is irrelevant because the tractor and zero grazer is a hell of a lot heavier anyway so the pressure on the ground is still higher overall.

Can u take cows to the grass like in NZ It is more Efficient just need good lanes and fences
@timothyprice68032 ай бұрын
Cows do trample, shit on, and in general don't get all the grass off the land. Nz also has alot of hills that means we can't use a system like this but where possible on flat ground we could.

This will be the top Item in the Viewing Guide in the next issue of Practical Farm Ideas. Jim underlines two critical issues: 1 - reducing the cost of replacements by keeping older cows which might have slipped a few months, or maybe even lost a quarter because the barrener sells for €750 but her replacement heifer costs €1,500 and produces 10 - 20% less milk. 2. Getting palatable fibre into cows, especially in spring. Feeding zero graze grass is his solution. Excellent video

Greetings, dear farmers. I see from the comments that you have very big difficulties with the land. I am from Siberia and I have a hobby of breeding horses. I have a lot of land for grazing and making hay. There are tractors and everything necessary for making hay. If any of you really want to start breeding beef cattle, then I can offer you this breeding here in Siberia on partnership terms. Our meat market is experiencing an acute shortage of meat, so this niche can be said to be empty and without competition. On my land areas You can increase the number of broodstock to 3000. Breeds such as Hereford, Galloway, and Angus are suitable for our climate. If you're interested, I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Write to me in the comments

Cows are on grass full time since 10th of February via zero grazer. Ground conditions too wet to let out cows for 2nd rotation. doing very little damage with zero grazer. 2 kg less concentrates less in parlour and higher litres , protein and fat than other years. Re growth much quicker. IMO they are the way forward.

Zero grazing is nothing new. In the 70’s and 80’s a lot of farmers were green chopping with New Holland flail mowers which blows the grass into feeder or dump wagons.

I’ll “invest” in letting my cattle graze with 2 moves per day. Not capital expenditure’s on equipment to bring the feed to them, and then bring the fertility back to the land. It takes less Human Resources to do it my way with well trained cattle. People wonder why farmers go broke….
