As a divorced 50 yo with 2 adult children, I see no benefit to marriage at this point in my life. The only thing I would add about having a long term girlfriend is giving each other the medical power of attorney and to have a Trust for my children.

You don't need to get married for medical reasons. There are legal documents that can provide almost all the benefits of marriage which you can revise at any time. Also, "back in the day," women didn't have options to provide for themselves and weren't even allowed to get bank accounts and so marriage was basically their only option for navigating life. That is why they stayed in marriages, not because they worked harder at their marriage or were more dutiful. And marriage has never been a spiritual relationship. In biblical times, men SOLD their daughters into marriage. And the main reason divorces are mostly initiated by women is because the male becomes more of a liability than an asset. Solo living is the simplest way to live; cohabitating with a man is much more work. Not to mention, I get hit on by lots of married men and so I have no idea why a woman would want to marry. Usually , it is the princess-type who's obsessed with having a wedding who wants to get married these days. And in terms of men losing all their assets, assets acquired during the marriage are community assets if you're in a community property state. So obviously those assets are divided in a divorce. And alimony is only awarded in 10% of divorces. Men are awarded custody of their children 30% of the time. In my experience, it is mostly men who want marriage, especially when they start to worry and who's going to take care of them as they age. Almost all men end up being dependent on women in their latter years. My father was dependent on me for the last 6 years of his life. There's no way I will put myself in that situation again. It's incredibly burdensome. I've had men that I dated years ago who are now in their 50s.call me up and ask me to move in with them. It's quite pathetic.
