I had a 66 model 383 build was : 30 over trw 383 magnum replacement pistons 60 thousands in the hole unbalanced rotating assembly, 140 pounds of cylinder pressure, 69 906 heads cut 28 thousandths and a street port and polished stock valves, purple shaft 484 lift and 284 duration cam, crane roller tip aluminum adjustable roller rockers, edelbrock torker 2 intake with a street port and polish , 750 holley mechanical secondary carb, hooker 17/8 headers, 727 torqueflight tci 3,000 street fighter converter, dana 60 rear 4:56 gears in a 83 dodge ram short bed 3,600 pounds without driver through the exhaust, hoosier quick times tires and pump gas best 12:50 at 109 mph back in the early 90s never dyno tested and probably lower 9 compression ratio with that cylinder pressure i as well as a lotta other people at the track was pretty impressed with the performance i think with the right parts a 383 mopar is a pretty stought little cubic inch big block !!!

What's cranking compression psi? That'll reveal why its soo soft. 0.050 in the hole is ridiculous, that should've been rectified during the build, that'll destroy quench which is not good. Didn't see him degree the cam to varify it's installed correctly, that can be a huge problem as well.

So you have an airflow issue. A poorly done valve job can kill airflow. Im sure seats sunken too far can also effect air flow. They say anything withing 1" off the seat is the most critical for airflow, discharge coefficient etc. You'll get it whooped Nick.

Be interesting to measure & see exactly where top dead center actually is, and degree the cam. Mopar non-hemi engines like a narrow lobe seperation angle 104-108 in my opinion. Whatever it is, Im sure you'll find & correct it.

Good show Nick . I'd sure look at the cams specks compared to builds that produced wear on the headrest . I always preferred a hundred eight separation with duration that fits his overall use case . Thanks T/C/E

Love this engine. Love the odd intake manifold(s), and the supremely well balanced HP and torque. THIS is the mill Mopar fans should rave about, not so much the Hemi. One thing that seemed odd to me is that the air cleaners made it run leaner - I would have thought that restricting the intake air flow would have made it run richer.

Well ??? What else can you do for higher numbers ??? I'm kinda disappointed... In light of all the modern science ... Was kinda expecting higher numbers !!! In my youth I quickly found out that the Hemi Game was all about the Dollars !!! As a farm boy and after granadeing A 69 Street at 149mph I still managed to coast into trees and avoid the tickets . That were well in excess of the value of the 69 super chicken !!! I quickly found parts well out of my reach and wallet size !!! It's really good to see that these pieces of Automotive Magic are still alive !!! Especially since my small wallet has difficulty even keeping a 4 banger alive !!!

I'm kinda curious what a "Chill Can" for the Fuel would actually do ??? Old school chill can is a coil in a can of ice ... Heard between 10 an 25 horses ??? Then there's the water injection or other liquids ???

I went through this last year with hydraulic flat tappet cams. Both lobes being wiped and lifters having the entire top ground off! I went to a roller, that fixed the problem.

Mopar deck height almost always need machining and degree a camshaft can make a big difference in power, I did 340 8 years ago spent good money machine shop the heads got everything done degree camshaft made more then stock but used more modern cam profile.

Everyone knows that money is always a consideration when reworking a older car or trucks power plant. But spending cash on another set of parts cost without knowing how much is left on the bone. The original heads can not only be reworked but upgraded with new and larger seats and valves and the ports can be opened to match checked by a flow bench. Compared to the starting point of where they are now. That 383 can match or surpass a 440 no problem. I know if it was my engine i would reset the starting point on those heads and be ready for the next rebuild. That's the most important thing when dealing with a numbers matching engine, Keeping it all together and making the most of what you have.

Why not do a compression check? Leak down? Maybe the cylinders aren’t machined properly or the rings are gapped correctly?
