Are galvanized or stainless steel nuts and bolts better to mount solar panels on the respective stands?

You did not really explain what galvanic corrosion is! What you said is "aluminium atoms are going to leave this material and get onto the steel causing it to corrode" and this because the two materials are "at different electrical potentials". That does not make any sense to me.
@ShortRunPro9 ай бұрын
Galvanic corrosion is an electrochemical process in which one metal corrodes when it is in electrical contact with another metal in the presence of an electrolyte (such as salt water). One metal (Aluminum) acts as the anode and corrodes, while the other metal (Steel) acts as the cathode and remains protected. When these metals are in contact, and there's an electrolyte present, the aluminum corrodes at an accelerated rate while the steel remains relatively unaffected. We recommend keeping dissimilar metals from direct contact with each other by using insulating materials or coatings. Let us know if you need any further assistance!
@conorpodonoghue9 ай бұрын
@@ShortRunPro Many thanks for the update. In my application there is no obvious electrolyte present e.g. salt water. However, I have since done some research and it seems that even the moisture in the air can act as a weak electrolyte. Again, much appreciate the additional information and the offer of assistance.

Was this from rusting or baking? Is it a stainless pan? Trying to remove rust from galvanized roofing in the future if I accidentally hit it with Sodium Hypochlorite, so your info is appreciated! Thanks for taking the time to show this.
@ShortRunPro2 жыл бұрын
Hello Sud! This is filmed with a stainless pan with grime build-up at the bottom of the pan. Galvanized material that is outdoors will hold out for a good while depending on the environment (not so much on coastal properties). In our experience, the galvanized coating will last for a few years until it begins to have localized rusting in areas where the galvanized material was cut or bent. We suggest brushing off and cleaning the rust then following up with a galvanized paint or coating to cover up the raw steel.
@sudbuddiesexteriordetailin98432 жыл бұрын
@@ShortRunPro Good looking out! Its surprisingly odd that the paint is the only way although I understand you cant electroplate the roof again while its on.

So if a steel bolt is zinc coated and bolted into aluminum will the aluminum corrode?
@ShortRunPro3 жыл бұрын
The zinc plating is less reactive than raw steel and is therefore less likely to react with the aluminum. In moderately humid conditions it is likely that little to know incremental corrosion will occur. In high humidity conditions the use of an electrical isolating between the materials is recommended.

@@ShortRunPro what about on a set of car aluminum heads?
@ShortRunPro3 жыл бұрын
@@sambo92 We are by no means experts on the use of fasteners in an automotive application. However, researching the internet we find that stainless steel fasteners are often used with aluminum in these applications. There also appears to be fasteners that have a specialized zinc and aluminum fleck coating that is corrosion resistant in these applications.
