$385 million for 3 years... total waste of money. The only thing that made these ships relevant were the tomahawk cruise missiles and those could be fired from a frigate or destroyer.

great doco . the Fantastic Four .. the old saying " Never Say Never " . Who knows what will happen in future world events . These ships could still serve a purpose in war , and it would take a BIG BOMB to sink them ..

I arrived on the Wisconsin near the end of Desert Storm. I remember we smoked the fleet back to Norfolk, ( after the Ariel fleet photo on the way back from the Gulf) only to be told we couldn't port until the U.S.S. Kennedy came in first.

Anti-ship missiles would destroy them and it's impractical when a smaller and cheaper destroyer would provide as much coverage as a modernized battleship could. It's better to spend the money and steel on a supercarrier.

Shore bombardment is nothing like going up against another battleship. The Iowas never faced off with an enemy battleship of similar capability. The US was afraid of losing them. They we’re basically show pieces.

In which way is the Wisconsin the last battleship other than having the highest hull number? She wasn't commissioned last or decommissioned last. She wasn't the last to fire her guns either. I've always been curious.
@PastorwithoutaPulpit

After the Wisconsin took that hit she opened up on that artillery emplacement and basically leveled the whole small mountain/hill it was on. Shortly after that she received a famous radio transmission from another vessel there with her saying, "Temper, temper"...LOL

The song itself is actually pretty politically neutral. The personalities mentioned are from all over the political spectrum, and the point of the song seems to be that cult of personality is a bad thing no matter what side it's on. Unfortunately, it seems to be human nature to deify charismatic people. Left, right, and center.

My grandfather served on the USS Wisconsin during the "Battle of Midway". He was one of the sailors operating the 40mm guns, I remember him telling me stories of shooting down kamikaze planes during an ambush they got caught in while helping escort other ships/ vessels. Rest in peace grandpa ❤and to all veterans who served and have now passed. *Salute*

He might have been in the attack on Okinawa, but The Battle of Midway took place from 4-7 June 1942, six months after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. USS Wisconsin was completed in 1944.
