I'm not just trolling or being awkward but I switched off immediately when the first thing you added was the Retro Fighters controller. Looks the part, perhaps, but the stick sensitivity/gate on this thing is all wrong. Makes playing some games excruciatingly either twitchy or dull.
@retroperfection812 ай бұрын
I can understand that, I haven’t had any problems. You seem like a guy that needs the OG experience with original or near-original controllers, and that’s just fine. However, most people just want to play their games they remember as a kid and don’t care about any of that. I would consider myself a highly sensitive (and anal) gamer and I have no problem with this controller. But I also didn’t grow up with the 64, I was a few years older and grew up on the NES, Genesis, and SNES. So I completely understand where you’re coming from when you complain about about the stick on the Retro Fighters - my d-pads have to be perfect for me to play my old school NES games. So I understand. But I guess my whole point is that 95% of the people playing just won’t care about that.

@retroperfection812 ай бұрын
Yeah I wouldn’t. It’s going to have a lot of lag. I would recommend a scaler, never a cheap adapter for HDMI. The RetroTink products do an outstanding job with that. Some are very affordable, but they are not cheap adapters.
@White_Cucks_for_Kamala4 ай бұрын
My only complaint with the N64 is that even with an HDMI output card being installed, the graphics will always look horrible on an HDTV. There are so many artifacts, triangular dithering, blurry filtering, and a number of other unappealing graphical artifacts that appear to be difficult to remove. Take Star Fox 64. It looks horrible due to dithering. It would have to be stripped out of the code itself before it ever hit the video processor in the N64, and I'm not sure how that could be done after trying to look into it. In essence, I gave up on the original console and started playing N64 games on other systems because they look much better that way.
@retroperfection812 ай бұрын
Yeah you’re not wrong on that. Honestly, I don’t play mine on an HDTV, I am blessed to have several old CRTs to play on. When those go kaput I guess they’ll have some awesome texture packs or something for N64 games lol

One thing you missed: You need some of the 4Layer Forever Pack memory cards. They don't have a battery (like in the official memory cards) so you don't have to worry about losing your saves.

you dont need the memory cards for an everdrive. it saves to the memory card. before you turn off the N64 you hit reset to initiate the save

I’m down to try these wireless controllers but why is no one talking about the modded OG controllers with the GameCube joysticks?
@syncmonism7 ай бұрын
The original controllers have their benefits. When the control stick is in good condition on an original controller, it is actually significantly more precise than modern controllers. Modern control sticks can feel far too sensitive in some games, making fine and precise adjustments much more difficult. Modern control sticks use potentiometers, whereas the N64 original controllers use optical sensors which are actually more precise. The huge downside of the old N64 sticks is that they degrade relatively fast over time, though you can reduce the rate of this by using silicon based lubricant (either powder or gel). Brand new OEM controllers are highly valued by many speed runners, but my own personal opinion is also that OEM controllers in good condition feel better in some games because of how precise they feel. You can buy replacement parts which are more or less the same as the factory original parts, but they seem to be a little bit less consistent and a little less precise than the originals, but the parts are cheap and relatively easy to replace yourself, and even if it's not getting quite as good as a brand new OEM control stick, it will likely be far superior to a control stick which has seen significant wear. The only good brand I know for those is Kitch Bent. The parts for a full replacement come to around 6 USD, but you'll want to buy a bunch at once to save on shipping costs, which could be around 10-20 USD (or more) depending on where you're ordering from. There are also metal control stick parts which significantly improve the reliability of the sticks, and will retain the precision of a brand new control stick for a long time (though they are not all equal, as different people have made them). Nobody has ever managed to produce them quickly enough to meet demand, so people have often had to wait YEARS before getting them, and some people have gotten screwed over by sellers who took their money and then never filled the order. Good quality metal control sticks are HIGHLY prized by speed runners, and have sometimes sold for thousands of dollars.

I'd say getting the NSO N64 Controller with a BlueRetro Bluetooth Adapter is better than the Brawler when it comes to playing the games as they're designed to. The Brawler is more sensitive and in FPS games this is noticable. Rumble works accurately and the BlueRetro has 4 memory slots. Only hassle is that in order to use the memory slots you have to connect to the BlueRetro adapter via Phone/PC bluetooth and format the memory slots in order to use them in games but once that's done it's smooth sailing.

Well I have the N64 with S-Video and a RetroTink 2X Pro (which was $130 when I bought it)...but I've just been debating for the last 9 months or so to splurge on the Everdrive 64 X7 or just go with an ED64 Plus. I obviously know which is better...but the X7 is TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS...before shipping and tax and I still need to buy the MicroSD card. So it's roughly $250 when all is said and done...and every time I'm close to pulling the trigger, I pull back. Christmas time usually affords me some disposable income (I get money from family every year)...but $250 is still steep. Steep enough that it makes me question my monetary decisions. There's a lot of positives to consider, but something always makes me think otherwise. If it was $100 cheaper, I would have had it by now.

I have an ed64 plus man honestly it works just fine I got it for 70 I believe I maybe one day will upgrade but for now it’s fire and I get to play what I want
@retroperfection812 ай бұрын
So yeah, it wasn’t long after this video that I had someone offer me $450 for this whole setup and I took it. Two reasons: 1) I have a MiSTer FPGA setup and it rocks. N64 plays very smooth on there, even on a CRT. 2) the N64 came out right as I was a senior in high school, so I never owned one and never had one until much later. So I didn’t have any nostalgia attached to it. Totally agree with you though, the Everdrive is stupidly expensive. Shouldn’t be that much.

I was really, really skeptical to even attempt modding on my 3DS. I’ve had it since 2014 and I never really considered a need to do so considering for many years after Nintendos online servers and shop were up and I just didn’t want to take any risks with modding my own console. Infact, I really didn’t mod any console until this year with my Wii because I was worried about losing all my data on my wii which I’ve had since I was a kid. I got it homebrewed and backed up the NAND. Fast forward to this year and past homebrewing my wii, seeing Nintendo pull the plug on the eshop and now online soon is devastating and it made me reconsider my prior stance. I took aside a few hours to read a notable guide in the modding community and attempted it. Surprisingly the available guides really helped- even to a novice like me, I had homebrew and it’s associated apps up and running in an hour and I was able to back up all my games to my PC so I’ll never worry about losing them again. (which I’ve unfortunately done before and with my Wii discs- either by scratches or misplacing the cards) I can say it was well worth it, it won’t be for everyone, but it certainly was for my use case. For those worried about doing it, just be careful and do NOT skip any parts of the guide you follow and VERIFY you are following the right instructions. I almost made the mistake of using the New Nintendo 3DS guide on my original one because I’d thought I had the new one and thankfully checked again before I did anything major. I hope this helps others like it did for me. I’ll also say, modding got me to fall back in love with my 3DS, which honestly I didn’t think it could do but it certainly did, and I’m glad I did it.
